Reflection

Today, we remember a mother and son who were both saints. Monica was a strong Christian woman of North Africa. When her son Augustine turned away from Christianity she never stopped praying for him to come back. Augustine studied many other beliefs but was never satisfied until he heard God's word calling back to Christ.

His mother's prayer was answered and he returned home to Africa. There he became a great bishop, preacher and writer. His most famous book, called Confessions, is the story of God's love pursuing him. In it he also wrote of his great love for his mother. She died in 387, he in 430.

Prayer 

God, always loving,

you call us to be ready to follow Jesus your son,

and to be generous in his service.

Teach us to be fearless and faithful even in hard times.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
