Student Agency & Voice

Across term one we have held forums where we ask students their ideas and opinions on several school issues.  One of these issues concerned the playing of rugby during lunch and recess breaks.

The issue

Injuries were occurring during the playing of rugby with some students needing medical attention including concussions.  We did not want to ban the games because we know that students enjoy this time during their breaks from lessons.

The forum

We asked our senior students to discuss the issue and they directed us to some of our younger players, who were asked to join the forum. The group worked with Ronique, one of our multi-cultural aides, to brainstorm ideas so that rugby can be played safely and enjoyed by everyone.

The solution

Students involved in the forum have organised a Tag competition which is open to all students.  This widens the opportunity for all students to participate in a safe and fun competition, learn new skills and make new connections.
