Engage Program
Engage Program – Round 1, 2022
Our first round of the Engage Program kicked off in Week 5 of Term 1. Paul (teacher), Sara (wellbeing) and I (lead teacher) welcomed 13 students from across Year 8. Each day begins with a “Check in” where we ask “how are you feeling today?” and “how can you help meet class expectations today?” which is a really positive way to start each day. Each day we do some literacy and numeracy with a focus on practical application and “real life”. One of the student’s favourite activities is doing a class word boggle, where our aim is to get more words each time. Our current record stands at 180, which is huge! We learn about various community issues with this term’s focus being “Animal Welfare”. Students learned about battery hens, puppy farms, cat over-population, animal testing and what local shelters and the RSPCA do for our community. As an initiative, we ran a “Blanket and Towel” drive, encouraging our school community to donate clean, old towels and blankets for us to drop off to our local shelter. Students made posters and stuck them up around the school as a campaign. Initiatives such as this raise the student’s levels of empathy and make them understand how we all can help our local community.
Our program has been updated this year to include a Hands On Learning day for those students keen to try it out. This has been hugely successful with the boys working with Holly and Paul to build a wall in the HOL shed as well as personalised tiles for the splashback. Overall, this round has been very positive with student’s experiencing lots of success at school. We will continue this round into Term 2 and then will look forward to helping these students transition back into their regular class and then welcome more students to do it all over again! Thanks to our school community for supporting our program, we really appreciate it. Cheers from Deb, Paul and Sara in P19 – Be Kind, Be
Safe!
