Drama

In Year 10 Drama, students have spent the last ten weeks building their understanding of designing and directing for theatre. From learning about stagecraft such as costuming, set design, prop design, and hair and make-up, to how each design area comes together to create a production; this hard work culminated in a performance of the play ‘Snagglewort’ by Richard Yaxley.

‘Snagglewort’ is a short play about the power of advertising and consumerism, and how people will purchase anything if it is advertised in just the right way. The year 10 Drama class proudly presented two interpretations of this short play to an audience of staff, year 7s and 9s on Wednesday April 6th, with great applause after both performances. And the class is looking to build on that success as we move into term 2 and begin focusing on getting ready for our next performance.”

In Year 9 Drama, students have been building their expressive skills through the study of mime, vocal dynamics, and improvisation. This work has led to the students developing a series of scenes called a tableaux. This year, the students decided that their tableaux would be an interpretation of artwork from the Renaissance era; bringing to life paintings like Da Vinci’s ‘The Last Supper’, Raphael’s ‘School of Athens’, and David’s ‘The Death of Socrates’. The students weathered many disruptions and absences to pull together and perform to an audience of year 7s toward the middle of March.

As we move into term 2, the year 9s are looking forward to expanding their newly learned performance skills to include building characters and working with scripts.
