Recollections of life in a primary school in 1969

In the spirit of knowing our history to avoid simply repeating it, below is a link to an episode of The Moth recently replayed on ABC RN telling the story of a child’s experience at school in 1969.

School Council Report

A School Council Meeting was held on Monday 29 May. This was the first meeting with our new members for 2017–18. Council reviewed the minutes of previous meetings as well as all correspondence received by the school from March to May.

Our discussion then focused on a number of areas:

The Resources Subcommittee reported that the school is arranging quotes for repairs to guttering and the gym wall. The subcommittee will also review the school’s Sponsorship Policy and processes. Our Music Trivia Night on 24 June should raise the additional few thousand dollars we need for the water bubblers and we hope to have these installed during the July school holidays.

We endorsed the Education Subcommittee Terms of Reference and this will soon be available on our website. The Terms of Reference helps clarify the role of the subcommittee and how we support the involvement of new members.

Our new Communication and Engagement Working Group will create strategies to deliver more effective communication within the school community. The working group consists of four parent councillors and two staff members and will run until the end of third term. We look forward to a written report and recommendations from the working group at the next School Council meeting on 26 June.

The Master Planning Working Group is looking at carrying out an upgrade to the toilet block adjacent to Lennox Street using the Capital Works Program funding that was allocated to MPW in the recent State Budget. This project will develop further over the next six months.

The new Parent and Carer Concerns and Complaints Policy was endorsed at the meeting. This is a clear protocol for raising concerns and complaints with teachers and school leaders. The policy details who to contact if there is a concern and where to go if additional information is required.

Jeff was pleased to report that MPW is working on refining its practices around supporting children with individual needs.

We look forward to providing more updates from School Council after our June meeting.
