ECP Theatre Company’s production of Fragmented/Produkce hry Fragmented v podání Divadelní společnosti ECP

Fragmented marked the return of the ECP Theatre Company after four years. Scenes from the classic Theatre of the Absurd plays by Beckett, Pinter, Sartre and Havel were blended with more contemporary pieces and some devised material from ECP students. Woven together, this hour-long play kept the audience on their toes as they watched multiple storylines unfold at once asking the question, what is the meaning of life and what makes us truly happy? 

The Na Zábradlí theatre has a close connection with ECP’s founder Václav Havel. Close to Charles Bridge, this was where Havel started his career - first as a stagehand and latterly as a dissident playwright.

Hra Fragmented přinesla návrat Divadelní společnosti ECP po čtyřech letech. Scény z klasických absurdních her Becketta, Pintera, Sartra a Havla byly kombinovány se soudobějšími díly a některými prvky navrženými studenty ECP. Takto poskládaná hra, která trvala zhruba hodinu, udržovala diváky ve střehu, když sledovali, jak se najednou odehrává několik dějových linií protkaných otázkou, jaký je smysl života a co nás dělá skutečně šťastnými.

Divadlo Na zábradlí je úzce spjato se zakladatelem ECP Václavem Havlem. Nedaleko Karlova mostu zde Havel začínal svou kariéru – nejprve jako kulisák a později jako disidentský dramatik.

An Audience with Dr Barbara Day/Setkání s Barbarou Day

The cast of Fragmented met with Dr Barbara Day, our very own Czech Theatre expert. Dr Day is a Founder Governor of ECP who first came to Prague in the 1960’s where she spent time in Divadlo Na Zábradlí, where our cast had performed the week before. She shared her experience and views on Czech Theatre of the Absurd and Experimental Theatre, looking at how things have changed and developed over the years, linking this with the history of the country and her own personal lived experiences.

“Dr Day was really articulate and very interesting. She had lots of stories about the history of Czech Theatre in Prague. I had never really heard about this before. Even if you are not a Theatre enthusiast, the history is fascinating. Knowing that we have performed in the Theatre she was talking about, and that she watched us, was really special.”

Herci vystupující ve hře Fragmented se setkali s Dr. Barbarou Day, naší vlastní odbornicí na české divadlo. Dr. Day je zakládající členkou správní rady ECP, která poprvé přijela do Prahy v 60. letech, kde trávila čas v Divadle Na Zábradlí. Na tomto místě vystupovali i studenti ECP. Dr. Day se podělila se o své zkušenosti a názory na české absurdní a experimentální divadlo, popsala, jak se věci v průběhu let měnily a vyvíjely, a vše propojila s historií země a jejími osobními zkušenostmi.

„Přednáška Dr. Day byla velmi působivá a zajímavá. Vyprávěla o historii českého divadla v Praze. Nikdy předtím jsem o tomto tématu neslyšela. I když nejste divadelní nadšenec, historie je fascinující. Pocit, že jsme hráli v divadle, o kterém mluvila, a že se na nás dívala, byl opravdu výjimečný.“

Face to the Wall by Martin Crimp/Tvář ke zdi od Martina Crimpa

The first Year 3 Performing Arts performance was of the short and tragic play Face to the Wall. The Drama students expertly blended physical theatre with dialogue to create Crimp’s shockingly deadpan tragedy. The music students supported them with the song Creep by Radiohead that added to the haunting atmosphere.

První představení studentů divadelního umění ve 3. ročníku byla krátká a tragická hra Face to the Wall. Studenti odborně propojili fyzické divadlo s dialogem a vytvořili Crimpovu šokující mrtvou tragédii. Jejich spolužáci, kteří studují hudbu, je podpořili provedením písně Creep skupiny Radiohead, což přidalo na strašidelné atmosféře.

Open Mic 

Thank you to Mr Bureš and the team for an entertaining evening at the Open Mic event in Galerie Beseder on November 22nd. The event was extremely well attended. Over 30 performers entertained the crowd with a variety of ensemble, duet and solo performances. 

Děkujeme panu učiteli Burešovi a celému týmu za zábavný večer Open Mic v Galerii Beseder, který proběhl 22. listopadu. Akce měla mimořádně hojnou účast. Více než 30 účinkujících bavilo dav rozmanitými skupinovými, duetovými i sólovými vystoupeními.

As always, I enjoyed the Open Mic very much. There was a nice variety of music genres and a lot of the students and teachers came to support which is always nice to see as a performer. I would also like to thank Mr. Bureš for making the sound as good as possible with the facilities he had. 

Jako vždy se mi akce Open Mic velmi líbila. Vystoupení byla plná rozmanitých hudebních žánrů a hodně studentů a učitelů nás přišlo podpořit, což je vždy pro účinkující příjemné. Chtěl bych poděkovat panu Burešovi, že vystoupení ozvučil tak, jak to s dostupným vybavením nejlépe šlo.

The Open Mic was very daunting leading up to the performance, however once you actually get on the stage it loses its significance and the fear fades out making it quite easy to perform well!

Just like the Cultural Olympiad, the Open Mic is a notable part of the ECP culture. Held annually, it provides an opportunity for students to show their musical talents and passions. The Open Mic has something for everyone - for those more keen to blend in there's the ECP band and for those who don't mind the spotlight there's the option to perform alone or with a friend.

The audience was as varied as the choice of music genres being performed. Be it rock, classical music or pop that one is interested in, the Open Mic has it all. This year was no exception as it truly provided the audience with everything.

This year's open mic was held at Beseder Gallery in Prague 9. A short way from The English College in Prague, the gallery grounds made for an inviting space for the concert. They also provided the audience the opportunity to explore the current exhibition - Beauty and Conflict by Matthew Dols. The captivating artworks helped set the atmosphere for the upcoming musical show.

All of the performances were very enjoyable but some truly stood out as one of the best. The most memorable for many would most certainly be the final song - Stand By Me by Ben E. King. Played by the ECP band, the catchy song stole the audience's heart.

Před vystoupením na Open Micu jsem byl dost nervózní, ale jakmile se dostanete na pódium, strach zmizí a je docela snadné to dobře zvládnout.

Stejně jako Kulturní olympiáda je Open Mic významnou součástí kulturních akcí ECP. Koná se každoročně a poskytuje studentům příležitost ukázat své hudební nadání a vášeň. Open Mic má pro každého něco – pro ty, kteří se chtějí více zapojit, je tu kapela ECP a pro ty, kterým nevadí reflektory, je tu možnost vystupovat samostatně nebo s kamarádem.

Podobná rozmanitost platí i pro publikum, protože se hraje velké množství hudebních žánrů. Ať už jste fanouškem rocku, klasické hudby nebo popu, Open Mic má všechno. Výjimkou nebyl ani letošní ročník, který divákům nabídl kus od každého.

Letošní Open Mic se konal v Galerii Beseder v Praze 9. Galerie poskytla příjemný prostor pro tento koncert a nachází se nedaleko školy. Diváci také mohli prozkoumat aktuální výstavu Krása a konflikt Matthewa Dolse. Podmanivá umělecká díla pomohla vytvořit dobrou atmosféru pro nadcházející hudební show.

Všechna vystoupení byla velmi příjemná, ale některá skutečně vynikala. Nejpodmanivější byla pro mnohé jistě závěrečná píseň – Stand By Me od Bena E. Kinga. Chytlavá píseň, kterou hraje kapela ECP, si uískala srdce publika.

Overall it was a very nice and interesting event. I really enjoyed myself and was glad I could sing in front of a crowd. I really appreciate the fact that no one was left out and everyone was given the chance to shine.

Celkově to byla velmi pěkná a zajímavá akce. Dobře jsem se bavila a byla jsem ráda, že mohu zpívat před publikem. Velmi si vážím toho, že nikdo nezůstal stranou a každý dostal šanci zazářit.

Visual Arts - spotlight on Year 5/Výtvarné umění – 5. ročník 

Year 5 have undertaken some short experimental projects as they begin their IB coursework. These projects are designed to take students out of their comfort zone and challenge them to explore new approaches to two dimensional, three dimensional work, photography and moving images. 

Studenti 5. ročníku začali v rámci programu IB pracovat na několika krátkých experimentálních projektech. Tyto projekty jsou navrženy tak, aby vyvedly studenty z jejich komfortní zóny a vyzvaly je k prozkoumání nových přístupů k dvojrozměrné či trojrozměrné práci, fotografii a pohyblivým obrázkům.

‘Shadow Assemblage’: Jimin Son 

Shadows are mostly achromatic grey. So, I wanted to make a coloured shadow rather than a grey shadow, so I used coloured glass and coloured CDs. The result is that the colour of the glass comes out clearly only when the light is closer to the object than I expected; the shadow was similar to the light reflected in the water. 

Stíny jsou většinou achromaticky šedé, takže jsem chtěla udělat spíše barevný stín než šedý. Proto jsem použila barevné sklo a barevná CD. Výsledkem je, že barva skla je zřetelná pouze tehdy, když je světlo k předmětu blíže, než jsem očekávala. Stín byl podobný světlu odraženému ve vodě.

I was inspired by the Indonesian shadow puppet called Wayang Kulit. By using a taut linen screen with a source of light behind it, the artists manipulate the puppets between the lamp and screen to bring the shadows to life and tell a story. The narratives often have to do with  good vs.evil. I find Wayang puppets visually intriguing as they are made of leather and bamboo - but the complex details can still be seen through its shadows.

I experimented with coloured light, here blue and pink. This is because these colours were never used in Wayang Kulit so I want to create tonal contrast between the warm tone with the colder tone in blue - creating visual excitement.

Inspirovala mě indonéská stínová loutka jménem Wayang Kulit. Pomocí napnuté plátěné obrazovky se zdrojem světla za ní umělci manipulují s loutkami, mezi lampou a obrazovkou, aby oživili stíny a vyprávěli příběh. Příběhy se často týkají dobra a zla. Loutkové divadlo Wayang je pro mě vizuálně zajímavé, protože je vyrobeno z kůže a bambusu – složité detaily lze přes i stíny stále vidět.

Experimentovala jsem s barevným světlem, zde modrým a růžovým, protože tyto barvy nebyly ve Wayang Kulit nikdy použity, takže chci vytvořit tonální kontrast mezi teplým tónem a chladnějším tónem v modré – což vytváří zajímavý vizuální efekt.

I started by cutting out the 4 oak trees and the house which I had printed out, after which I glued the cutouts onto black cardboard paper and cut them out to give some firm support. After that I made a card stand which is supposed to represent the ground, and stuck the trees and the house onto it, supporting the whole structure via industrial tape and sticks.

Začal jsem tím, že jsem vystřihl 4 duby a dům, který jsem si vytiskl. Poté jsem výřezy nalepil na černý karton a vystřihl je, aby měly pevnou oporu. Následně jsem vyrobil stojánek, který by měl představovat zem, a nalepil jsem na něj stromy a dům. Celou konstrukci jsem podepřel průmyslovou páskou a tyčinkami.

My idea for the project was to create a medieval like shadow play. I wanted to recreate the cozy atmosphere of age old stories told by the fire. I decided to go with the theme of dragons, because they are regarded as iconic figures in  many mythologies and stories,so they are widely recognisable and work well as simple cutouts.

Mým nápadem pro projekt bylo vytvořit stínovou hru ve stylu středověku. Chtěl jsem znovu vytvořit útulnou atmosféru příběhů starých bytostí vyprávěných u ohně. Rozhodl jsem se pro téma draků, protože jsou považováni za ikonické postavy jakékoli mytologie a vyprávění, jsou dobře rozpoznatelní a fungují dobře jako jednoduché výřezy.
