Kimochis Calm-Down Breath

This is a simple strategy to make BIG feelings a bit smaller so it's easier to talk about them.

How?

1) Hold your finger in front of your mouth.

2) "Smell the flower" (breathe in through your nose)

3) "Blow out the candle" (breath out through your mouth)

When & Where?

Practice when your child is calm!

e.g. do a calm-down breath when they wake up, in the car, while watching TV

Who?

Children (or adults) can use this anytime they want to calm themselves down a little bit.

Why?

Breathing helps emotional regulation.  When your child can breathe and make big feelings smaller, it will be easier for them to talk about what the big feelings are.
