Y12 Legal Studies excursion

Eliza A. and Tahlia G. - Year 12

On Friday 24th March the Year 12 Legal Studies class went into the city with Mr Chapman and Mrs Hardinge to the Supreme Court and the County Court of Victoria.

In the morning we went to the Supreme Court where we were escorted into the Banco Court. In the Banco Court we met Justice Tim Ginnane, who explained to us all about how the Supreme Court works and what happens in both criminal and civil trials. After this we had the pleasure of watching part of a civil trial (a negligence claim).

We were then taken to the Supreme Court Library where we saw portraits of multiple Supreme Court judges dating back to the 1800's, including the iconic Marilyn Warren, who was the first female Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. We also saw a portrait of William Barak, the last chief of the Yarra Yarra Tribe and a respected Wurundjeri elder and leader.

After lunch we headed to the County Court to learn about the jury system in Victorian courts. We got to go into a court room and participate in a mock jury empanelment, following a script of what would happen when there is a jury selection before a trial.

This was an amazing experience and we gained lots of legal knowledge to help us with our studies. On behalf of the Year 12 Legal Studies Class, we would like to thank Mr Chapman and Mrs Hardinge for taking us and making the day fun!
