Reading and Viewing

This term, we will assist students in improving their decoding, fluency, and vocabulary skills for both fiction and non-fiction texts. In order to improve learning in our Science Inquiry unit, students will be exploring and establishing connections between texts that focus on change. To provide diversity in their reading journey, various reading methods like Close Reading, Literature Circles, Guided Reading, and Reading Journals will be implemented.

Writing

The focal point of writing this term  will be supporting students with persuasive and informative texts. These writing genres will link directly to our Science Inquiry unit on Change. Students will develop their understanding of skills related to structural and language features as well as the purpose for writing such texts.

Students will continue to learn various spelling patterns through the Reading Eggspress Spelling program. This will be supported through weekly homework activities that include practising their spelling words. Students will learn grammar conventions that will help enhance writing, such as time connectives, technical noun usage, and informative text language features.

Speaking and Listening

Students will continue to focus on improving their speaking and listening skills. They will be practising how to speak clearly, confidently, and effectively in a variety of situations, such as prayer, discussions, presentations, and class conversations. They will also be learning how to actively listen to others and participate in group discussions.

Maths

Number and Algebra

This term students will undertake a unit on multiplication and division. Students will  be working with whole numbers to build fluency and recognition across a range of different contexts.  Students will then explore, extend and practice applying various strategies to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division equations with and without technology. Students will  compare, order and represent decimals. They will investigate strategies to solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with the same denominator.

Measurement and Geometry

In our unit on location, students will learn about the concepts of location, position, and direction. They will develop their  understanding of coordinates, grid references, and compass directions. Through hands-on activities, students will develop their spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills.  In our unit on time, students will learn to convert between different units of time and use AM/PM notation to solve simple time problems. They will apply their understanding of time to solve real-world problems and develop skills in reading and interpreting timetables. The students will choose appropriate units of measurement for volume, capacity and mass.  They will learn to convert between different units of measurement for length, mass, and capacity.

Statistics and Probability

In learning about Statistics and Probability, students will focus on chance by learning about probability and chance outcomes. We will use tallies to record and collect data and learn how to use this data to create graphs. They will interpret a range of data displays, including a variety of variables.

Inquiry and Religion

Religion

Students will learn about the sacrament of Confirmation and its role in the Catholic faith. They will explore the history and meaning of Confirmation, and reflect on the spiritual significance of receiving the Holy Spirit. Through prayer, reflection, and discussion, students will deepen their understanding of the Catholic faith and prepare for the sacrament of Confirmation. Students will learn about the importance of Pentecost. They will explore the biblical story and reflect on how these teachings can be applied to their own lives.

Inquiry

This term, students will explore different processes of chemical change. They will also learn about the properties of different materials and how they behave in chemical reactions. By understanding the signs of a chemical change, students will be able to identify when one is taking place. Students will design, hypothesise, observe, record and explain their findings in relation to chemical science experiments.

Social & Emotional Wellbeing

Students will be learning about positive resilience, rights, and respectful relationships, with a focus on gender relations. This means they will be exploring the ways in which people of different genders can interact and work together in positive, respectful ways. They will be learning about the importance of treating others with respect and kindness, regardless of their gender. These lessons aim to promote healthy relationships and social interactions in both the academic and personal lives of students.

School Sport Victoria - Team Vic Trials

Team Vic representative program provides a development platform for Victorian students to challenge themselves against Australia’s best school aged athletes across numerous sports at the annual School Sport Australia (SSA) Championships.

It needs to be emphasized that these trials form part of School Sport Victoria’s Gifted and Talented program and are not ‘come and try’ opportunities. Each child is trialing for a State Team and as such we must attest to each child’s athleticism, elite skill level, previous high level achievements in a particular sport and their school behaviour.
