Mandarin Newsletter – Week 2 Term 2 2023
Junior Level
During the first lesson in our Prep class, we had a good review on the topic of numbers as well as the five basic vowels and 4 tones in Mandarin. We also started exploring the new topic about colours and had a fun activity of colouring shape monsters by reading the new words for colours. In the following weeks, students will continue to practise using formal expressions in Mandarin in school contexts, such as using titles to address teachers and peers as well as using short phrases for daily conversations. We will also expand the vocabulary on colours and learn how to discuss this topic in short conversations.
As for our Year 1/2 students, after reviewing the topics on classroom stationery, we also started learning common characters associated with our classroom routines and school experiences. During this term, through exploring the new topic on hobbies and leisure activities, we will also be engaging in lots of short conversations and simple sentences to further build up our awareness of the sentence structure in the Chinese language.
Middle Level
In the first week, students from Year 3/4 classes reviewed the key words and expressions around the topic of occupations. We also started learning the new unit of ‘Places and Locations’, and practised reading those new words in Chinese characters by creating our neighbourhood design. Throughout this term, students will further use learned phrases and sentence structures to discuss different places in their neighbourhoods and who works at those places. They will also be exploring the lifestyle in Chinese provincial capitals for their cultural learning.
Senior Level
In the first lesson for our Year 5/6 students, we had our much-anticipated Kahoot challenge on useful phrases and expressions for daily conversations. As the extended learning for Term Two, we also practised a new set of phrases and expressions for travelling. During Term Two, we will explore the new topic of feelings and emotions and learn to use different sentence structures to express ourselves in Mandarin. We will also practise replacing words in modelled sentences to express a particular meaning and understand the specific word order in a Chinese sentence.
