Literacy and Numeracy Learning
We have hit the ground running with our learning in Term 2!
In Literacy we have been diving into our class text 'Lion: A Long Way from Home.' Studying this text has required us to analyse and consider the various persepctives of the characters as well as unpacking the themes in the text. One of the major themes so far has been differences in Religion. Last week the students were curious to learn about the differences between Islam and Hinduism. In groups we worked together to research and present our findings. It was amazing to hear the rich discussion between the students as they worked together. Here are some of the wonderings they had:
"I wonder how many people practice Islam?"
"Who knows about Hinduism? Where will we find more information?"
"Are these Religions similar to Catholicisim?"
We have been equally as busy in Numeracy! Our focus for the next few weeks is on Fractions and Decimals. We collectively agree that fractions and decimals can be quite challenging, however the students have shown great problem solving, creativity and resilience.
In our target groups we have been learning how to simplify, add, multiply and subtract fractions. We have also been learning how to convert a fraction to a decimal and a percentage. The students have had a lot of fun simplifying some complex fractions and then breaking them down to distribute across a number line that matches their equation/fraction problem. Such a fun and engaging unit!
