Zoo Snooze

In March of Term 1 Year 4 were lucky enough to spend the night in the Adelaide Zoo during their famous Zoo Snooze.  After a self-tour in the afternoon, were we met by the zoo education staff. They organised a game of 'zoolympics' while Mr Meixner or Mr Hill fired up the BBQ, with Mr Fulton and Miss Wood on kitchen duties for dinner.  After our meal the children organised their sleeping bags and were then introduced to a zoo resident, Homer the lizard.

Next, it was time for the night walk where the staff told us many stories about the nocturnal animals - where they had come from and what we can all do to protect them and their habitats.  Luckily, none of the children were nocturnal and so all had a good night's sleep, ready for their early morning call for pack-up and breakfast, before a final private tour of the zoo to see all the other early risers, like the tiger and the orangutang.

Everybody learned something new and would like to encourage you all to support the zoo and all the good work it is doing.

Artist incursion

In April of Term 1 we welcomed Lydia Gauci, an indigenous artist, for a full day’s art incursion. Miss Pedler invited Lydia into Year 4 to lead us on a piece for this year’s upcoming SALA exhibition in August.  We used the acclaimed indigenous artist, Sally Morgan’s piece, ‘My Place’ as our inspiration. Lydia introduced us to some commonly used symbols and themes in aboriginal art, particularly those associated with belonging and place. We worked first with pencil and paper and then with paint on canvas to produce our own individual piece, held together with a collaborative piece. Keep the last week in August free so that you can come and see what Year 4 created.

Assembly

To close Term 1 we worked very hard on our Year 4 assembly.  We took the audience through some of the best bits of the Zoo Snooze with a video, some reflections and some art work.  We also focussed on the Catholic Social Teaching, the common good.  This had been our RE work with Mr Meixner over the term, where we learned that the church’s mission is to look after the poor and the vulnerable.
