Wellbeing

We invite all Year 9s to participate in an exciting new study of the Raise mentoring program, which your child’s school is currently implementing.

The Raise program is an in school individual mentoring program for young people at risk of disengagement from education or poor wellbeing. The program matches up to 15 students per school with their own comprehensively trained volunteer mentor who they work with over 23 weeks, building practical skills, understanding and knowledge.

The Raise mentoring program is being evaluated by the Melbourne Graduate School of Education at the University of Melbourne. We want to understand the benefits of the program for those who are receiving it, such as resilience and  school engagement. Part of this project is to compare changes in students in these areas across 2023. This helps us understand if the changes we see in those receiving Raise is different or similar to those who do not.

Every student in Year 9 will be provided with an information pack and invited to take part. Students who agree to participate will be asked to complete two 15-minute surveys, one in Term 2 and one in Term 4. Participation in this research will not influence whether students are selected by the school to participate in the Raise mentoring program. Students who are selected to take part in the Raise mentoring program will be invited to complete some additional surveys.

Please get in touch via raise-eval@unimelb.edu.au if you have any queries about the study. We look forward to receiving Year 9s surveys!

AFTER SCHOOL HOMEWORK PROGRAM

The Wellbeing Team at Lalor Secondary College in collaboration with ‘The Smith Family’ and ‘Whittlesea Community Connections’ provide support for students with their homework by delivering the After School Homework Program (ASH). ASH is on Tuesdays between 3pm – 4pm in the College Library. Teachers and trained volunteer tutors attend each session to assist students with work; students are encouraged to bring their digital devices for educational purposes. Students also have access to computers, internet, and library resources, whilst staff from the Wellbeing Team provide supervision and assist students getting themselves organised to complete work. The whole school educational initiative is open to all students. Parent / guardian / carer consent is required. Consent forms are available from the general office or the wellbeing space. Students who arrive after 3:30pm may not be allowed to participate unless they have a suitable reason. All staff are welcome and encouraged to attend.
