Assistant Principal

Year 11 & 12

Ms. Laura Forster

This year it is wonderful to once again be involved with ABCN programs for our senior students. This term some of our year 11 girls are fortunate to be involved in their Focus Program, which provides an opportunity to be mentored and exposed to essential leadership styles to provide young women confidence and skills to engage in a successful and meaningful career. This initiative addresses the underrepresentation of younger women in specific careers the Australian workforce. At the heart of the program, is fostering a sense of self belief that will encourage them to aim high. Our girls will be working in small teams with women executives who will act as both role models and mentors. Sharing their own career journeys and challenges can make an enormous impact as our students consider their options for the entry into the workforce over the coming years. Thank you to Ms Melanie Foster for her support in accessing these programs for our students.

On Thursday Ms Bussell presented a career planning session for our year 11 students. These sessions are designed to provide further opportunities for senior students to plan and prepare for post school pathways. University and TAFE entry requirements, VCAA rules and guidelines as well as potential open day opportunities were included in this session. Students were provided with resources to support their planning. A reminder, that you as parents and guardians are very welcome to contact Ms Bussell and make appointments to support your child’s planning regarding post-secondary school pathways.

The date for this year's GAT has been announced by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, and it falls on the 15TH of June. The General Achievement Test (GAT)  has over recent years undergone some changes which mean that all VCE and VCAL students will need to sit this test.  These have occurred as part of the reform of the VCE and VCAL system, Victorian senior secondary students will this year have their literacy and numeracy skills measured against new standards in a reformed General Achievement test.

The new standards will indicate whether students have demonstrated the literacy and numeracy skills typically expected of someone completing their secondary schooling – giving another indication of their readiness to move onto further education, training or employment.

The GAT will be split into two sections:

Section A will assess literacy and numeracy skills.

Section B will assess skills in mathematics, science, technology, the arts and humanities, with an increased focus on critical and creative thinking skills.

All students enrolled in one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3 –4 sequence will be required to sit Sections A and B. Senior VCAL students will sit Section A. Further information will be provided closer to the date.

Year 12 students will have a dedicated assembly in the coming weeks to support their planning and preparation for the GAT.
