Whole School Happenings

Maths Olympiad and Maths Explorer

As a part of our Student Enrichment Program, this year Bimbadeen Heights is taking part in the highly regarded Maths Olympiads for 2023.

This is an annual contest that has been offered by Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads Inc (APSMO) since 1987 and is designed specifically for high achieving students.

Unlike many other maths competitions, the Olympiads consist of four separate contests held approximately six weeks apart between May and September.

The overall aim of the Olympiads is to encourage students to develop important mathematical problem solving skills in an enjoyable environment.

The Olympiads are designed to be challenging, however, even though students are competing against other members of their class and teams from other schools, they are primarily competing against themselves and trying to improve their skills over the course of the year.

On Wednesday 3rd May, a group of selected students from Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 participated in this year’s first Maths Olympiad and Maths Explorer tests.

Our students had 30 minutes to attempt five challenging problems.

In the practice sessions leading up to the first sessions, the focus was on developing the students' mathematical strategies and problem-solving capabilities.

It was really pleasing to see the students implement some of these strategies in the test. The Maths Olympiad and Maths Explorer programs are another way in which we are developing the capacity of our students in Numeracy via a deliberate focus on talking about and sharing strategies, developing reasoning & problem-solving skills and celebrating success.

Further updates on the progress of the Maths Olympiad and Explorer teams will be communicated in future newsletters.

Kind regards,

Free to good home

We have a chest freezer here at school that is no longer required. We would love for it to go to a good home, free of charge, but we would need the freezer to be picked up from the school (we are unable to deliver it).

The measurements are H850mm x L1060mm x W700mm.

First in to say they would like it and can collect it themselves is the lucky new owner. We need it to be picked up as soon as possible. Please contact the office on 9726 9989 .
