Year 5/6 Camp
On the 26th of April the year 5 and 6s boarded the buses bound for our City Camp. As the bus cruised through the bustling streets everyone was pumped and excited. We were all dying to find out who was in our cabins… although, with our City Camp, they weren’t exactly cabins! We had the extra fun of staying in fancy hotel rooms.
We soon learned that this camp involved A LOT of walking! In fact, the total amount of kms we walked over the three days was 41 kms! That is literally a marathon!
All the walking was well worth it because we got to visit some incredible places. The highlights of Day 1 included, The Immigration Museum, The Shrine of Remembrance, Lunch in the Botanic Gardens and learning about homeless people at The Big Issue. We really felt deep empathy for the homeless after hearing their story and imagining standing in their shoes.
The end of Day 1 culminated in a visit to Kingpin at Crown where a fiasco awaited. Exhausted, hungry and depleted, we discovered that our long awaited meals were hot and steaming ready for consumption with only one problem…they were at Kingpin in CANBERRA!!!!!! The teachers were extremely proud of our resilience for understanding that mistakes happen, including the one with our Kingpin booking. Eventually we enjoyed a delicious meal and unlimited arcade games.
On the morning of Day 2 we awoke with a buzz and were ready and raring to go. Fuelled with a delicious breakfast we hit the streets again. We visited The Ian Potter Museum and The Old Melbourne Gaol where we heard incredible stories of escape from the past. We also heard all about the infamous bushranger Ned Kelly who met his end within the imposing walls of the old gaol. A highlight for all who were on camp was our 2 hour guided tour of the MCG which involved walking on the hallowed turf, visiting the behind the scenes places such as the players change rooms and we followed up at the MCG museum where we learned all about the history of sport in Australia.
Our final day kicked off with another culinary delight which was our buffet breakfast. Chef Douglas bent over backwards to please us all with a delicious and nutritious start to the day. Once again, we pounded the pavements down to Hosier Lane to take in the spectacle of Street Art before continuing on to ACMI. We loved seeing all the imagination and creativity in the various exhibits and started to imagine ways we could possibly use some of these ideas of presenting for our own exhibition later this year.
We returned to St. Columba’s exhausted but happy to be home. We were all very much looking forward to sleeping in our own beds that night. We would like to thank all the staff for making it an experience we will remember for many years to come.
