Student News

Congratulations to Year 11 student Lachlan Rees who made the qualifying times and competed in the Victorian Open Swimming Championships last weekend.  He also competed in the recent Victorian Sprint Championships, placing 11th overall in the butterfly, and 13th in freestyle; and made finals at the Victorian Country Long Course Championships, placing 8th and 6th in the 100m Butterfly and Freestyle respectively. These are impressive achievements and we congratulate Lachlan for his dedication to compete at such a high standard competition.

Swimming

The annual Inter House Swimming Carnival was held last Tuesday at the Hamilton Outdoor Pool. A full report on the day from the Swimming Captains is included in this edition of the newsletter. The GD Swimming carnival was held this week and a full report will appear in next week’s edition. Our elite swimmers now prepare for the ICCES competition at MSAC in Melbourne on 8 March.

House Athletics

The annual House Athletics Sports will be held on Friday 4 March at Pedrina Park, commencing at 9.10am. There are lots of opportunities for all the students to participate on the day, with a full program and track and field events running simultaneously. Please note, the 1500m events are being held before the day at lunchtimes on the school oval.

It would eb wonderful to have some parents and friends of the College to volunteer to assist during the day. Please contact me if you are interested in helping for all or part of the day. House teams will be selected in House meetings this coming week and the programme of events will be sent out via email and appear in in next week’s newsletter.

Basketball Report

It was great to see our students back out on the basketball courts last week in the various junior Spring/Summer season competitions. With only a couple of rounds remaining before finals, it is time for students/parents to be thinking about whether or not they are intending to play into the Autumn/Winter season which will commence in the last week of Term One.

I need to know this Monday, 28 February if your child will not be playing.

Likewise, I need to hear from students currently NOT PLAYING basketball who would like to play in the next season in a junior or senior team.

Any parent or community member who may be interested in coaching a team next season is encouraged to contact myself.

Any basketball queries should come to either myself for Seniors (Under 14, 16 or 18) teams or Miss Brabham in regard to Under 10 and 12 teams.

Football report

If your son or daughter are looking to play football this year I encourage them to play at the highest level in the western part of Victoria in the Hampden League competition. The Hamilton Kangaroos have teams that have started training or are about to so, if your child is interested in trying out to play they should attend the training sessions at the following times at the main ground in town – Melville Oval:

Under 18’s – Monday and Wednesday 5.30-7.00pm

Under 16’s – Friday 4.30-5.30pm

Under 14’s – Wednesday 4.30-5.30pm

Girls Youth team – still to be confirmed

If you require more information please contact myself or our 2022 Football Captains, Tyler Hately and Micaela Meyer.

House Swimming Report

With sesquicentenary spirit in the air, the 150th Annual House Swimming carnival was set to be a terrific day - both in and out of the pool. Each House brought immense House spirit and their best swimmers, as they knew what was on the line…to be the 150th House swimming champions!

In the pool, competition was fierce with many races ending in head-to-head battles. Notable individual performances on the day included Chloe Adams winning the Female Aggregate and taking home the Fyfe Family Cup with a perfect score of 128/128 points. A well deserving Lachlan Rees won the Male Aggregate, also with perfect score of 128/128 points and taking home the Kerr Family Trophy for a most impressive fourth year in a row. WOW! The Laidlaw girls won the Girls Aggregate, however the Young House boys were not letting anything slip away from them, bringing home the Boys Aggregate.

Continuing tradition, the Year 12 students dressed up to celebrate their final House swimming carnival. Laidlaw’s Aussie Bogans were a menacing bunch poolside, with some Year 12s becoming unrecognisable under their newly found persona. Learmonth turned up the heat, having to call in the CFA crew to cool things down. Berry Year 12s were burglars, wearing masks and gloves to be extra stealthy. Perhaps their game plan was to steal the House swimming trophies if things did not go their way. However, they did manage to swipe the Coxon/Campbell Cheering Cup with their extreme Berry pride and enthusiasm. Finally, everyone was spellbound by the Year 12 Young House fairies. They cast magic over the pool, which allowed their relay teams to exceed beyond belief and with just a flick of their magic wands they left Laidlaw stunned and won the Grand House aggregate by 57 points. The 150th House swimming champions were to be Young House!

The lunch break saw competition flaring up in the pool, with the highly anticipated student v teacher race beginning. With each team having five competitors a piece, there was no room for mistakes. The race began with a questionable start from Mrs Williams, who ploughed through the water with her flippers. However, she was no match for the natural fins on Poppy Austin who powered alongside her. Things became serious when Dr Hirst entered the pool, after 150 years of training his performance proved to be convincing with him cutting through the water with excellent technique and a powerful kick. It was into the final leg, Mrs Winter Cooke for the teachers and Harry Mould for the students. It was neck and neck both swimmers giving it their all, but it was Harry Mould for the students pulling further and further away from Mrs Winter Cooke allowing the students to once again finish on top.

We would like to thank all the parents and friends who came along to support the swimmers. A huge thank you must be extended to Mr Alexander for organising the day, the timekeepers and officials including, Chief Referee – Mrs Kim Bright, Starter – Mrs Robyn Rees, MC’s – Ms McGoon and Dr Hirst, and finally everyone who worked behind the scenes to ensure the day ran seamlessly.

We also congratulate all the swimmers selected to represent the college at Glenelg Division. We look forward to seeing all of you in the pool at trainings over the coming weeks.
