Parent: “what homework do you have?”

Student: “nothing”

The above is a common conversation that I know occurs regularly at home. Often in my household as well!

Homework has a purpose in student learning; it helps to reinforce what’s being taught in the classroom, enables parents to actively engage in their child’s education, and indirectly teaches fundamental skills such as time management, organisation, task completion, and responsibility.

Good homework is a form of what cognitive psychologists call retrieval practice and is a tool to facilitate learning and reinforce concepts taught in the classroom. While homework does serve a purpose, it’s important that students also have a life outside of school. Social and academic development are both crucial for teenagers. Please help your child/ren to find a balance between school and social life.

Some of the best homework can occur each and every evening:

  1. Go over the new content covered in each class that day. Make notes of your notes. This helps when you get to exam revision – your key notes are already done!
  2. Read ahead in your textbook/novel. Nothing like being in front!

The question remains: “what homework do you have tonight?” Delve a little deeper if you need to.
