15’s GIRLS AFL - REPORT

GAME 1 v TRAC

After having the bye the first week, the girls were excited to kick off their campaign against TRAC. A few nerves were evident in the first few minutes but the girls settled into the game nicely. Issy Cunningham led the way with numerous centre clearances and a couple of goals. After getting used to the physicality of the game, led by Amy Leddin’s tackling, the girls were able to kick away and record their first win – 6.4.40 def TRAC 3.3.21

Goal scorers: Issy Cunningham (2), Lilli-Mae Brunton (2), Lucy McIntyre (1) and Tilly Vearing (1).

GAME 2 v KHS

Our second game was against Kooringal High School. The girls were fired up and ready to play and dominated the contest from the opening bounce. The contest was mainly played in our forward 50. Again, Issy Cunningham proved to be a problem for the opposition while Tilly Vearing in the ruck provided our midfielders with numerous opportunities. Young year 7 student Caitlin Wheeler was vital up forward, kicking 2 goals. The girls ran out winner’s 9.4.58 def KHS 2.0.12

Goal scorers: Issy Cunningham (2), Kendall Wales (2), Caitlin Wheeler (2), Lilli-Mae Brunton (1), Lucy McIntyre (1), Tilly Vearing (1).

GAME 3 v KCC

Game three saw the girls come up against Kildare Catholic College. A change in location meant the game was to be played at Bolton Park. The girls had a good start scoring the first goal through Issy Cunningham. A head high tackle on Jessica Wendt gave us our second goal of game. Kildare then fought back kicking the next few goals. The girls rallied hard but were outplayed and in the end went down by 11 points 3.4.22 def by KCC 5.3.33.

Goal Scorers: Issy Cunningham (2), Jessica Wendt (1).

GAME 4 v WWHS

Game four had the girls backing up 2 days later to play the undefeated Wagga Wagga High School. With a few players out with other sporting commitments, the girls had to dig deep to run the game out. After a slow start, and with some inspiration tackling by Alice McLoughlin, the girls lifted. The midfield of Amy Leddin, Alex Ingram and Harriet Priest worked tirelessly, putting a lot of pressure on WWHS. The backline, consisting of Paris Hall, Jolyne Igiraneza and Abbie Lewis worked hard to limit WWHS opportunities, forcing them to kick a number of behinds. In the end, WWHS ran out winners 3.9.27 to 2.2.14.

Goal Scorers: Alex Ingram (1), Madeline Lucas (1).

A huge thank you needs to go out to Harry Bennett, Jack Carey, Rhys Mooney and Josh Connellan. These Year 11 boys coached each week and were instrumental in teaching the girls about the game of AFL. Their expertise and commitment was both valued and appreciated by all involved.

Nathanael Mooney and Kyle Hall were fantastic with goal umpiring each game and also providing some valuable coaching tips from behind the goal line. Our scorer Harrison Leddin did a great job, keeping track of each individual goal scorer and taking down coaching notes to be reinforced during the breaks.
