Year 8 History

In Year 8 students have been studying a History unit on the Vikings. Students have immersed themselves in the unit through an exploration of where in the world the Vikings raided or traded, the Viking social structure and system of law and order. Students also created a persuasive real estate advertisement to “sell” Viking longhouses.

An example created by Ruby Hamilton, Abigail Chalayil and Briellen Stephens is included below.

Year 9 and 10 Commerce

As part of the Consumer Choice unit, Years 9 & 10 Commerce students have been investigating the factors that affect consumer decisions and how these factors contribute to changes in behaviour and practices of businesses. Over the past couple of weeks, each class has had the opportunity to be taken on a guided tour of the Wagga Wagga Marketplace by the Centre Manager, Ms Maria Sharman. During our visit Ms Sharman spoke to students about the operation of the shopping centre as a business in its own right and how various factors impact on the retailers within the complex and therefore on the centre as a whole.

Year 11 Society and Culture

We were fortunate to have Senior Constable Troy Fisher, Police School Liaison Officer, visit the college to assist Society and Culture with their primary research investigations. The students have been investigating the impact of mobile phone technology and associated applications on the social experiences of adolescents.

The students developed their own interview questions for Troy with an emphasis on cyberbullying, responses to inappropriate use of mobile phones and strategies for protecting themselves online. The responses provided by Troy were comprehensive, relevant and insightful for student research. We are very appreciative of Troy’s dedication to assisting students in the Riverina with their classroom learning.

Stage 6 Geography

Fieldwork is a means of understanding geographical environments and the nature of geographical inquiry, and is a compulsory component of the Stage 6 Geography syllabus. In Week 3 of Term 1 the Year 12 Geography students embarked on their “Ecosystems at risk” field trip. Our two case studies this year are Karst (Caves) and Alpine areas. Our field work included a guided tour of Yarrangobilly Caves as well as the 13km Summit Walk at Mt Kosciusko. The conditions were freezing, literally, proving first hand why this area is an ecosystem at risk. The wind chill factor dragged temperatures below zero. The focus is on management and protection of unique ecosystems. Fieldwork can enhance learning opportunities for a wide range of students because it caters for a variety of teaching and learning styles.
