Around Our School
Student School for Leadership
During November of 2015 Zac Allamby, Abbey La Fontaine, Jay Wilmot, Sian Nugent and I went to the Snowy River Campus of the Student School for Leadership. This is a special government school which hosts Year 9 students from all across Victoria. We participated with three other schools: Bright P-12 College, Mallacoota P-12 College and Sandringham Secondary.
During our stay, we spent a lot of time on personal development and team building skills. This was achieved through activities such as bridge building and a three-day hike, both of which definitely brought our team closer together. Additionally, we did lots of outdoor activities such as bike riding, canoeing (lots of canoeing), snorkelling, caving and hiking. We also had classes during the day, which included working on our passports, documenting what we were doing, our beliefs and values and also developing peer skills.
This amazing opportunity wasn’t all fun and games. As a part of the school and the program we were required to create a Community Learning Project to ensure we used our leadership skills for the Frankston community. We created and enacted a plan to go to Overport Primary School and run a leadership and health workshop for the Grade 5 students. This program was designed to help them in preparing to become the leaders of their school once they reached Grade 6. We took the students through seven activities that challenged them mentally and physically. We have since received feedback that our program helped the students’ leadership development, and the Grade 5 students really enjoyed the afternoon.
My time at Snowy River helped me to build some amazing friendships and I hope that they will continue for the rest of my life. We all became better people through our journey and created the most amazing memories along the way. Having this experience is really a once in a lifetime opportunity and I would recommend it to all year nine students!

Disabled Surfers Association
The Disabled Surfers Association (DSA) Mornington Peninsula held an event at Point Leo beach on Saturday 16 January. These annual events have been organised to support anyone with a disability willing to have a go at surfing in a safe and happy environment. It was all about ‘surfers helping surfers’.
One of our most memorable moments that we still talk about was riding the wave with a participant and celebrating at the end knowing we, as a team had made their individual wishes come true! Without doubt, another highlight was just being a part of our volunteer team made up of a group of past and present Frankston High School students. The positive vibes and the smiles all day united us as a team making this event one of the most rewarding and worthwhile experiences ever! It truly was the best day and we cannot wait for the final 2016 event at Point Leo on 5 March.
It would be great to get another group of the Frankston High School community together for the next event! You don't have to have any surfing experience, you just need to have a good heart. To put it simply, you will be helping a range of people with varying disabilities or impairments to surf and get into the water. Accessing the beach and surfing is something most of us take for granted and for many people, it is virtually impossible. The day is such a rewarding experience and one that we certainly recommend.
If you know someone that has a disability, bring them down for a surf. They can register on the day and the cost is $10. Volunteers and Carers are free. There are both land and water volunteer roles, and you just turn up on the day! "Helping a person will not necessarily change the world, but it will change the world for that person”.
