Bayside Goes Bananas

They said it couldn’t be done but the banana plants in the Trade Skills Centre garden are producing beautiful ripe bananas!

Admittedly, they are not the size of commercial crops and lack a little in presentation but they are plentiful, nutritious and very sweet. The secret to our success, apart from the loving care, is their position hard against a West facing wall, lots of manure and the Lady Finger variety.

If you would like to replicate our success, there may be a few banana plants for sale at the next Bayside Community Market on Thursday 30 March.

Trades Skills Centre Cafe

The North Campus Cafe is open every Thursday from 10:30am to 1:30pm and is open to the public as well as Years 10-12 students.

Tyre Reef Update

Year 10 VM students have completed the tyre reef in the North Campus dam and it is amazing to see several native ducks already using the logs to rest in safety from any predators. The students did a great job overcoming obstacles and problems to achieve a great result.

A massive thanks goes to David Goschnick for inventing this concept and collecting tyres and other materials for this wonderful sustainability project. The class will be building native duck nesting boxes next term and these be mounted above the water near the tyre reef.

Front Garden Bed Tidy Up

Pantry Plus

Our Year 11 Certificate II in Active Volunteering students are designing and building a community garden as a part of the wonderful Pantry Plus program, which operates at Peninsula City Church. They dug over existing garden beds and took measurements for proposed new gardens.

This facility will be maintained and expanded by our students in the future to give Pantry Plus clients the opportunity to pick fresh produce and then create nutritious meals for their own families. I really appreciate the support of Ben Kelly from our maintenance team, who comes along to help our students and provide expert guidance throughout this project.

Moonlit Sanctuary

Our VM students attended a working session at the Moonlit Sanctuary and were able to tour the Koala fodder gardens in various locations around the sanctuary. Geoff (projects manager) talked to the students about successes and failures of their fodder gardens so that we can plan into the new Bayside North Campus koala fodder garden coming next term.

This will be an awesome opportunity for our students to learn real life skills in the school setting and bless the Koala’s at the Moonlit Sanctuary for many years to come. Thanks to James Siede for helping to run this fabulous session.
