THE COMMUNITY DAY

WOW, what a day!

Thank you so much to all the families who attended our community day. It was such a wonderful day. It was great to see so many families on the day. I know that when I went home, I had so much to talk about with my family. Talking about the community day is a wonderful opportunity for you to help develop your child’s oral language and writing skills.

Talking with your child is important because it builds your child’s language and communication skills. This is a great way to support your child’s early literacy development. Talking about events that have happened encourages children to build their sentence structures, their language and their comprehension.

If you took photos of the day, this is a great way to engage your child in conversations and writing tasks about the experience. Talking about these photos will help your child build their language and understanding of sequencing events. It allows your child to use language such as first, next, then, last or before that and after that.  Recount language is important, as it helps students with their storying telling and writing development.

Some fun writing tasks that you can do with your child at home using the community day event are:

  • Make a photos album or scrapbook of the day for your child to share with their class
  • Make a list of all the activities or tasks that your child completed on the day
  • Write a recount using sequencing words
  • Write a letter/email to a friend or family member about their experiences.

Please send me any writing or activities that you may do with your children about the community to vpirrotta@sfmoreland.catholic.edu.au as I would love to showcase them in the newsletter in the coming weeks.
