Auslan News
This week in Auslan classes, we have continued practising our new signs for common FRUITS, including: apple, pineapple, tomato, apricot, lemon, orange, mango, watermelon, banana, grapes, avocado, coconut, pear, cherries, strawberries, peach, plum, and FRUIT SALAD!!
** See if your child/ren can sign the fruits that they would like added to your family’s weekly grocery list?!! 😊
Grade Prep students have been enjoying “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and signing some of the fruits that the hungry caterpillar eats. They have coloured a beautiful butterfly like the one that the hungry caterpillar becomes at the end of the story, and are signing some of the colours in their butterfly wings.
Grade 1-2s have been practising signing “I like…” and “I don’t like…” to indicate what fruits they like/don’t like. They have made little fruit people to sign and sorted pictures of fruit into like/dislike to sign to the class.
Grade 1-2s are also continuing to revise and practise the signs for the following COLOURS in Auslan: red, yellow, pink, green, purple, orange, blue, white, black, grey, brown, gold and silver.
Some of these colours, the Grade 1-2s will be using in small group performances for their classmates in the coming weeks, so keep practising!!
Grade 3-4s enjoyed practising fruit signs in the Fruit Salad boardgame again (see the photos below). They were not impressed if they turned over a ‘fruit salad’ playing card which sent them back to the Start!! This week, the 3-4s have been paper weaving fruit baskets to show their favourite fruits to sign to the class. They are learning to sign “I like…” and “I don’t like…” and are combining fruit names with the colours of the fruits.
Grade 5-6s have been sharing their Jamie Oliver Ultimate Fruit Salad Recipes by signing their ingredient list to their classmates, and having their classmates interpret their lists!! Grade 5-6s have been learning “I like…” and “I don’t like…”, joining sentences using “and” or “but” in Auslan, as well as asking “Can I have…?”
Some students are going beyond expectations and using other signs we have learned to put together sentences to try to trick their classmates! It is amazing to see how much some students are already retaining from our previous Auslan classes!!
Keep up the fantastic signing Spring Gully PS!!

The students competed against the best swimmers from across central Victoria. The standard of competition was very high and our team is to be congratulated for both their individual achievements, and for the way they conducted themselves throughout the day.
One of the highlights of the day was the performance of our relay teams. Our Boys team finished 4th overall and our Girls team 5th overall. We also had outstanding individual swims from Charlie F (3rd in the 11 Years boys breaststroke), and Jed K (3rd in the 11 Years boys backstroke).
I would like to thank the parents/carers for organising the students on what was Photo Day for SGPS. I would also especially like to thank Michelle Maher for helping as an official timekeeper (and cheerleader), throughout the day.

Lunchtime Newcombe Tournament
This term, students from Grades 4 to 6 will have the opportunity to participate in a lunchtime Newcombe Tournament. Newcombe is a modified version of volleyball where players get to catch the ball rather that volley it. This tournament will be in the form of a Round Robin competition, with games being played every Monday and Wednesday lunchtime. Students who have nominated to play will be placed into a team and a draw has been created. Players do not need to be available every Monday and Wednesday – only when their team is playing.
