Chilli non carne & carrot muffins
From Erin and Kristen, Kitchen Specialists
In the kitchen over the past couple of weeks we have seen some fantastic knife skills being developed by Year Four.
Firstly, preparing a chilli non carne (chilli with no meat) students had a range of vegetables to cut into small pieces. Utilising the three techniques of 'Bear claw', 'Bridge' and 'Rock and Chop'; onion, celery, sweet potato and red capsicum was diced to perfection and added to their saucepan with various spices. The chilli once cooked was served with corn tortillas and some shredded mozzarella. The kitchen smelt wonderful, and it was lovely to sit with students and enjoy their hard work and eat together.
Next up on the menu was carrot muffins, courtesy of our wonderful harvest from the garden (thanks Tess). These were grated and combined with freshly chopped parsley and cheese, to create a tasty snack served warm with a garlic butter.
Kitchen classes are a fantastic way for students to take responsibility, such as the role of head chef and direct their team. Students share roles of cooking, cleaning, serving and washing up. Developing basic skills such as learning how to wash up and read a recipe, skills they will use their whole lives.
Experiences in the kitchen also provide the opportunity for students to work as a team, developing skills to collaborate with others, which supports developing a critical life skill that they will need for future life opportunities in their personal relationships and career opportunities.
Keep up the fantastic work Year 4, we look forward to seeing you in the kitchen next week.
