Legal Studies excursion

Visiting the Parliament of Victoria

Our Year 11 Legal Studies class had the fabulous opportunity to engage with our Area of Study 1 Legal Foundations in real life by going to the Parliament of Victoria. When arriving, we were shown around the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly chambers in which we were given a tour and completed a role play. Moreover, with the rest of the class, we were allowed to embody roles such as the Speaker, Clerk, Members of Parliament and many more, permitting us to further develop our understanding of the law-making process. The role-play was based on the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Amendment (Medically Supervised Injecting Centre) Bill 2017 students were able to act as Members of Parliament, reading extracts from speeches delivered by Ministers and other MPs at the time. We also went over some terminology we had covered in class and were able to ask any questions. In conclusion, we believe that it was an overall educational and rewarding excursion and we hope the rest of the classes enjoyed it as much as we did.
