Electric vehicle charging : Darebin community consultation

Darebin Council have started community consultation for an update to their Transport Strategy and also a new Electric Vehicle charging policy and would appreciate input from the school community.

As a background, the Darebin Transport Strategy was released in 2007 and Council has since been working hard to improve transport for the community. This includes achieving a significant reduction in crashes on local roads, an increase in trips made by sustainable transport, such as walking, cycling and public transport, and successful advocacy for increased state government funding for local transport projects.

Since the most recent update in 2015, there have been many changes to Council and State Government policies, and in society – like the COVID-19 pandemic and rapidly growing popularity of electric vehicles. All of this means it’s time for another refresh of the transport strategy, and to start working with our community on a new policy for electric vehicle charging in Darebin.

To contribute your views, please head to the consultation website (http://www.yoursay.darebin.vic.gov.au/transport), fill out the quick survey and share it within your community. Getting a range of views on this will help Darebin develop a strategy and policies that reflect the views and requirements of our community.

Petition for improvements at Northcote Tennis Courts

The Northcote Tennis Courts behind the Aquatic Centre and next to McDonnell Park are an asset to our community. For years these courts have served us well with public use and coaching programs, yet the condition of the facility does not meet current standards. Essential upgrades to the facility would bring the tennis courts up to standard with many of Darebin’s other sports and recreation investments.

A small group of people in Northcote are lobbying Darebin Council and State Government to help improve the facilities at these tennis courts. Although the tennis courts themselves are fit for purpose the other ammenities of the courts are extremely poor and have been neglected for too long. For instance, currently there is one port-a-loo available for use at the courts. This is extremely prohibitive to inclusion and participation.

Help young people prepare for working life

Volunteers from the school community are required to conduct mock interviews with local students to help prepare them for their working life.

The 2022 Real Industry Job Interviews (RIJI) program is a work readiness program that helps students develop good job search, resume writing and interviewing skills. The program is delivered at Northcote High School in Year 10 through a series of guided lessons. It concludes in a face-to-face mock interview with a local volunteer interviewer during regional RIJI events.

This year over 1200 students are participating in the RIJI from schools across the inner Melbourne regions of Darebin, Moreland and Yarra.

Your role as a volunteer interviewer:

  • Volunteers will be provided with the resume and job description for up to 11 students and some questions to help navigate the interview.
  • Interview events run approx. from 9 am to 3 pm.
