Digital Design excursion

Exploring Melbourne Uni and the Science Gallery
Our digital design class recently visited Melbourne university and the science gallery. We did this to gain some perspective on what could be achieved with digital design technologies, and to learn a little bit about the opportunity’s universities provide in this space.
At Melbourne Uni we were given a tour of their 3D printer area known as the cube. This is because they have a massive shiny cube with lots of 3D printers contained in drawers. Above the cube and inside the drawers there are multi coloured LED lights, giving the whole thing a very technological appearance.
After that we were given a tour of their other design areas. This included: a woodworking lab, a robotics lab, a 3d printer that could print in metal unlike the plastic the cube printers use, and laser cutters.
Finally, we went to the science gallery. We had a tour through an area that was filled with various exhibits about modern life and culture. This included things about social media and how it can affect us, a giant human hamster wheel, an experiment using music to help grow bacteria, and a mirror that took an image of you, then it used that image and an AI to write you a short poem.
