Mamma Mia! - Cast interview
Production Captain, Renae Bekas, and female lead, Donna Sheridan, hold a conversation with the four male leads - Elijah Slavinskis, David Overton, Noah Emons and Jack Campbell-Manley - to prepare for the opening night of Mamma Mia! on Thursday 19 May.
Renae: What do you think of the story, characters, themes and ideas of Mamma Mia!?
- Elijah ('Sam Carmichael' - charming, successful architect, and one of Donna’s love interests): It’s honestly a pretty weird and wacky story, but at its core, it’s a story about family and love.
- Jack ('Sky Rymand' - Sophie Sheridan’s fiancé): Mamma Mia! is one of my all-time favourite musicals, and I’ve always loved the characters and its themes.
- Noah ('Bill Austin - good-natured travel writer, another of Donna’s love interests): Mamma Mia! takes a more musical approach to story crafting than past Kilvington productions, with the story built around the music of ABBA rather than the other way around, leading to a hilarious plot with plenty of twists and turns.
- David ('Harry Bright' - wealthy and conservative financier, another of Donna’s love interests): The characters are bold, dramatic and fun, as is the whole show. With a really big and talented chorus, the ensemble numbers should be amazing.
Renae: How have you approached production and your performance, including your character development?
- David: Being a jukebox musical (consisting of existing popular songs), Mamma Mia! presents a unique opportunity for me to develop an interesting character with little to work with. This has been an enjoyable challenge, and Ms Kosky’s expertise in drama coaching has really helped me grow as an actor.
- Elijah: I really didn’t think too much about the character, but Miss Kosky has really put an emphasis on character and emotion. This has made me think a lot more about Sam’s character and how he’s feeling and what he wants in each scene.
- Jack: With regards to the rehearsals, I’ve tried to make my character as believable as possible, referencing other stage shows of Mamma Mia!.
Renae: What will surprise people about Kilvington’s production of Mamma Mia! in comparison to the movie?
- Jack: I think with our version, people will be surprised at the depth at which we approach our characters' lines and how we get the audience to think.
- Noah: Compared to the movie, Mamma Mia’s! stage production includes quite a few extra songs including Thank You for the Music and Knowing Me, Knowing You. Our production will have a strong focus on chorus and unique staging design features, meaning the audience will find themselves closer to the action than ever before!
- David: Those who have seen previous Kilvington performances will sure be in for a surprise with a new set design and plenty of focus on the acting elements in the show. It should be spectacular.
We can't wait to see the show!

Star of the week
Marco Cavuoto from Daintree ELC recently learnt Suzuki Violin with Miss Vanessa Neagle. Marco only commenced violin lessons this year and he already knows how to play with good posture. In his last lesson, Marco played the opening of Twinkle's Busy Busy Stop Stop with the bow all on his own. Well done Marco!
