House Cross Country

Wednesday morning saw the whole school descend on Lake Hamilton Parkrun track to compete in the annual House Cross Country. The weather was perfect and energy was high at the start/ finish line with the 5km runners.  With the change of format, it was great to see the students running competitively and being able to push themselves on a clear track. This allowed the remainder of the students to walk/jog around all earning precious House points.

Koby Slattery-Fischer made a cracking time, being the first 3km runner over the line, followed closely by Year 12 student,Paige Kissel, as the first girl. Kyle Rhook took line honours for the 5km runners.

Runners who have qualified for the Glenelg Division Cross Country will be emailed with further details of the GD Cross Country which is the Monday of Week 3.

Congratulations to those students who won their respective age groups.

GD Athletics

On the 25th of March, 80 students from years seven to twelve travelled to Casterton to compete at the Glenelg Division Athletics. It was great to see Monivae showing the rest of the schools our competitive side in every event throughout the day. Overall, Monivae came first in the female aggregate and second in the male aggregate. Unfortunately, this meant we didn't get the win overall, placing second to Hamilton College. However our efforts did not go unrecognized as three of our best athletes won the age group champion. Congratulations Jessica Mibus and Sharnee Hutchison for your efforts on the day as this sees both girls age Champions for two years in a row. Finally, thanks to all the teachers who cheered us on from the sidelines and helped make the day run as smoothly as it did.

Congratulations to Paige Kissel and Joseph Cooper on the Athletics Captain appointments.

On Monday the 21st of April, a group of twelve students went to the Hamilton Golf club to participate in the SSV Secondary Schools competition. This was one of the best turn outs for a golfing event in a long time and hopefully we are able to repeat this in coming years. There were four competitions on the day; senior boys, senior girls, junior boys, and junior girls.  In the junior boys Harlie Mason shot a 42 to be placed second. Eddie McShane shot a 43 coming third, as well as Jack Rhook, Zac Elliot and Xander prentice all cracking 50 shots over the nine. In the senior boys I (Joshua Gordon) shot a 43 and took first place, Zach Burgess shot a 49,  placing second with Hamish Kearney just coming out over Nick O’Brien with a 50.

In the senior girls Molly O’Brien took out first place with a 46, and Sophie Walker shot a 63 to be placed third in the senior girls. Along with Molly’s first in the senior girls she also took out the very competitive putting competition beating male and female representatives across all schools.   A notable mention in this competition was Jack Rhook who came third in this event. Whilst Molly was the dominant O’Brien on the day, Nick played probably one of the best shots of the day after putting his drive into the wrong fair way and then putting it within five meters of the pin with his second.   With golf being the cruel game it is he unfortunately had a three-putt meaning he finished with a bogey after having a chance to get one of the few birdies of the day.

GD Cricket

Our 1stXI cricketers headed to Pedrina Park for the return of the annual GD Senior cricket competition. With only 4 schools in the competition the boys were hyped to make each ball and run count. The team banter started from the first ball being balled by Portland. Josh Gordon didn’t waste any time, hitting a 4 on the first ball, followed up by three more 4’s and a 6 to round off the first over for 23.   Zach Burgess’ time at the crease was short but productive with three 4’s to keep the run rate up. Tyler Ellis and Hamish Kearney continued the attack with the bat, both making 34. After posting a score of 152, the boys went out to make the Portland batting side work for their runs. This was short lived as Nic Lambert pulled off an amazing catch on the boundary to send the opener back in for 2. The wickets continued to fall with Zac Burgess 2/20 off 3 overs, Hamish Kearney 1/15 off 3 overs, Sam Craig 2/10 off 1 over, Nic O’Brien 1/3 off 1 over A winning result - 152 to 129

Game two against Baimbridge started off in a very similar way with lots of banter.  Josh Gordon opened once again and quickly retired on 40, Tyler Ellis quickly made 14 before being caught out. Hamish Kearney made 20 runs not out with an overall score of 93. Baimbridge were all bowled out for 91. Bowlers were Hamish Kearney 2/9 off 3, Zach Burgess 1/19 off 3, 1/29 off 3, Sam Craig 1/2 off 1.

Having won both games the Monivae team were the GD Senior Cricket Champions. Congratulations to Zach Burgess (Captain) and all the boys on a great day out.
