Congratulations to all students who so superbly represented our college today at the Geelong division of SSV Athletics Championships. Our college was awarded the Most Improved Award which is fantastic, and many students will progress now through to the next level of competition in term 3. Well done to all students and staff who competed today, we are certainly very proud of you.

Terri’s Tales

Rubbish

As I walk from class to class I’m disappointed by how much rubbish is on the ground! Seriously how hard is it to walk to the closest bin and put your rubbish in it instead of just throwing it on the ground and making the place look untidy. Even if it isn’t your rubbish why not pick it up and dispose of it. We have such a nice campus it would be great if you could do the right thing and keep it clean.

Victorian High Ability Program

Term 1: VHAP Maths

Over the past term, I had the privilege of being able to attend virtual VHAP Maths classes every Monday. In these classes, we investigated different sorts of maths, the sorts of things you don’t look at in class. We focused on the why and how of mathematics as opposed to the what.

One of my favourite things we got to explore was the Fibonacci sequence. You know, the one where the next number is the last two added up. It goes a bit like this: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8. We discovered that this sequence comes up a lot in nature. For instance, the spiral patterns in many flowers follow the Fibonacci sequence, as do pineapples. You can even find it in the spiral pattern of your ears!

Term 2: VHAP Maths and English

We’re very excited this term to congratulate ten Year 7 students who have been selected to participate in the Term 2 Victorian High Ability Program. Eight English and two maths students connected to their online tutors last week, joining other students from around the state. They will engage once a week with their state-wide peers to extend their learning and have some fun at the same time!

Zac McInnes - Swimming

Well done to Zac McInnes of Year 11 for representing Western Heights College at MSAC last Thursday, for the SSV State Swimming Finals. Zac came 3rd in the 16 Years Boys 50m Backstroke.

Guest speaker

Last Thursday our senior school students in Years 10 – 12 attended a presentation by Nathan Hulls. Nathan’s background in positive psychology, resilience and motivational techniques, enable him to connect with young people to empower them to make changes in their lives. Nathan related that he has faced many obstacles in his life, and that having overcome them, he has become a stronger, more successful person as a result. His message was one of understanding who we are as individuals, and when it comes to choices in life, making the decision that is right for who you are.

VCE PSYCHOLOGY REVISION

Question: How do you combine PE with Psychology Revision and cater for our VCE students’ competitive spirit?

Answer: By running a quiz and team revision tabloid in the classroom.

Last week the VCE Psychology students revised the research methods and social psychology concepts learnt in Term 1 with a competitive Kahoot quiz & a timed team tabloid activity. Students were broken into groups which they creatively named based on psychological terms and were challenged to complete four tabloid stations with included matching activities and difficult chapter crosswords. They had six minutes to collaborate to get as many points as possible with lollies & chocolates awarded to the team with the highest total.

Congratulations go to all the Psych students for embracing the crazy chaos of a classroom tabloid and to all the winning teams.

Who would have thought that revision can be so much fun.
