Mother's Day Picnic

Thank you to everyone who came along to today's Mother's Day Picnic or supported our Mother's Day Stall. Yes, it was cold, but boy it was lovely to see the children's excitement having their family members here at school with them, or putting so much thought into buying them a gift at the stall. Our students get a lot out of these experiences, and these will form some of the memories our students have of their primary school years. I wish everyone a happy Mother's Day for this Sunday. We took a number of photos of this event, some of which we will share next week with our community.

Special Guest Visitor

There was a surprise visitor at our school last Friday morning.  First thing Friday morning, our School Captains, Sam and Jayda, as well as a few members of our Student Representative Council (SRC), Mitchy, Harper, Harvey and Eva were surprised to hear they were going on a building site tour with the Victorian Premier, Mr Daniel Andrews and our local MP, Ms Jordan Crugnale.

Our students donned hard hats and high visibility vests, and got their first look inside our new gymnasium and Administration/classroom building.  We all stood in the gym on our new stage, which will be terrific for performances and assemblies.  Then we went down onto the stadium sized basketball court, where the final parts of the flooring are being laid.

Next we ventured into the Administration building, where we saw the first aid room, 3 new classrooms, an Art and Stem Room.  We can't wait for this first part of our building works to be completed, we expect handover by the beginning of Term 3.  After this handover, significant works take place on the rest of the school, including the building of more classrooms and refurbishment of some of our current spaces.

Student Free Days

For Term 2, 2022, the Department of Education and Training has recently provided schools with the option to hold each teacher’s allocated professional practice day on the same day for all staff.

As a result, we have re-schduled our Curriculum Day to later in the term.

Our Professional Practice Day will be on Monday 23rd May. Students will therefore not be required to attend school on this day.

Our Curriculum Day is now on Friday 10th June, this is a student free day.

Parents will be able to book their children into Team Kids, our Outside School Hours Care provider, who will run full day programs on the above two days. If your child hasn't been before and you would like to register you can do so here:  Team Kids

NAPLAN Year 3 & 5

Naplan testing will begin next week for students in Year 3 and 5. This year students will undertake most of their tests online with Year 3 students completing their writing test on paper.  The tests will be run between Tuesday 10th May and Friday 20th May with the majority of students undertaking the tests at the beginning of the week and catch up tests being offered to students who miss any tests.

We will be offering toast and a drink to students in the morning before they sit their test and celebrating their participation.

Please remember that NAPLAN is just one indicator of your child’s qualities – yet, the test does not assess all the special ways a child is exceptional and unique.

These tests do not show how good a child is at drawing, or how they can teach others to use a computer program. They do not show how graceful a child is when dancing or how confidently they can deliver a speech in front of a group.  These tests do not show how kind, caring or thoughtful a child is – or how you can be counted on to always help out and try your best. Because these are attributes that cannot be tested.

So please encourage your child to come to school ready to try their best and complete their test. But remember, there is no one way to ‘test’ all of the wonderful things that make a child special.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and (insert school name) is excited to be participating. The PRC application offers a range of exciting features including:

  • access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
  • a modern user-friendly interface
  • rewarding  students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
  • the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 2 September 2022.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklist and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: https://www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge

Term 2 Curriculum Inquiry History

Students at Clyde will learn History this term where they will be reflecting on the past, developing their curiosity about the world  and creating an awareness of past events in our society. Investigations will help students appreciate the world and how its people have changed over time.

Our aim is to ensure that students develop an interest in historical study, an appreciation of the past and develop historical concepts and skills identifying change, cause and effect.

Tutoring Intake 2

Every Victorian government school has at least one tutor working within their school. At Clyde Primary we have three tutors. This week in Professional Learning Teams (PLT) staff have been looking at the impact and growth of the tutor supports. Staff have reflected on academic growth and reading behaviours of learners.  Completion of our first intake means that we are ready for our second of four intakes for Clyde Primary students. Data discussions have taken place and if your child has been invited to be part of Intake 2 for tutoring a letter will be sent home shortly.

Education Week at Clyde Primary School

There will be a number of events over the week which include a Simultaneous Story Time on the 25th May and a Writing Competition. Both of these activities will be for students.

On Tuesday 24th at 9:00 am until 10:00 am, families will be able to come into the classroom to experience an Open Morning.  This session will consist of a range of literacy based activities that you will be able to take part in with your child/ children.

We will also be celebrating Education Week with an ‘Education Week Trail’, which will run on Thursday 26th May 3:30-4:30pm. The trail will consist of 15 Literacy and Numeracy questions for our families to work together to solve. These questions will be problem solving based and for a variety of year levels (to challenge all members of your family!).

Attached to the next newsletter will be the trail instructions and stamp sheet you will need for this community event.  On the afternoon of the trail, the instructions and stamp sheet will  also be available to collect from your child’s teacher.

If you have any further questions about the Education Week Trail, please contact your child’s teacher.

We look forward to seeing many of our Clyde families and our Clyde staff participating in this event.

Walk to School Day

On Friday 20th May students will be able to participate in Walk Safely to School Day. This event will being before school and will encourage walking to school. Further details on this event will be sent out next week.
