Career planning in Years 7 to 12

In Term 1 students in Years 7 to 12 began developing their 2022 Career Action Plan using the Department of Education and Training online platform My Career Portfolio. The My Career Portfolio platform links students with resources and can be used to store files and documents related to their course and career planning throughout secondary school. Students will continue to reflect on their growth, achievements and future goals as they further develop their Career Action Plan in Term 2.  Remember, logging in to My Career Portfolio is easy – just use your student EduPass email and password.

USEFUL TIP—participating in extra-curricular activities is an excellent way to explore current interests and develop new ones, make friends, unlock passions, and to build enjoyment in your life.  Not only that, but they make your resume look amazing.  So get involved…play sports, learn an instrument or a language, volunteer, draw, dance, design, enter a competition, get involved in the school production…  And keep a record of your activities so you can easily recall them in years to come.

My Career Insights for Year 9 students

Year 9 students will begin their My Career Insights journey when they complete the Morrisby Profile career assessment on Monday 9th May.  This personal career discovery tool helps students learn about the skills and abilities they could bring to a job and find out about jobs that match their abilities, interests and personality, and the subjects they need for those jobs. Students will receive a Morrisby Profile Report showing the results from the questions and quizzes, and identifying potential suitable careers.  A one-on-one career counselling session will be provided to students by an accredited Morrisby career practitioner and parents are welcome to attend. These half-hour sessions will be held from 15th to 17th June.  The service is provided free of charge to all Year 9 students, and complements the career education program offered at Auburn High School.  Parents are asked to provide consent online through Compass events for their child to participate.

Year 10 simulated job interview program

During the final week of Term 1, Year 10 students had an opportunity to hone their interview skills as they participated in Auburn High School’s Simulated Job Interview Program. Long awaited and  much anticipated after being rescheduled multiple times throughout 2021, students attended their interviews with overwhelming enthusiasm and positivity (and just a few nerves!).

Made possible with the kind support of 20 members of Rotary Hawthorn, the Simulated Job Interview Program aims to build readiness for the world of work and develop career management skills students will apply throughout life.  Our interviewers were extremely impressed with the exceptional calibre of our students and the way in which they conducted themselves.  Students should be extremely proud of their efforts and achievements at this early stage of their career journey.  It is very exciting to think what might be possible in the future.

We extend our greatest appreciation to Rotary Hawthorn for their continued support of the SJIP program which has been running for many years.  Thank you also to our Year 10 E4L teachers for their work in preparing students and to students Ruby R, Sasha F, Antony A and Yj I for their invaluable help on the day.

2022 VCE and Careers Expo

It was very exciting to see more than 140 students in Years 11 and 12 attend the 2022 VCE and Careers Expo at Caulfield Racecourse last Thursday.  Australia’s largest careers and education expo did not disappoint with over 100 exhibitors and 90 seminars providing students with the opportunity to gain information, resources and advice for their VCE studies as well as explore options available to them when they complete high school.  The buzz was tremendous as students from across Melbourne welcomed the opportunity to speak in person with university students, course advisers and industry representatives after two years of COVID disruption.  Students were encouraged to be curious and open minded, asking questions of multiple institutions to broaden their perspective on university/TAFE study and their particular fields of interest.  It was especially pleasing to see students overcome their initial reservations and step out of their comfort zone to strike up conversations that can help inform their future decision making.  Congratulations to all students who so positively represented Auburn High School at the expo!
