Making a Careers Booking
The Diocese has appointed a Transition and Pathways Specialist Pathways (TAPS) from the beginning of 2019 to each Secondary College to replace the previous role of Careers Advisor. While many of the elements of the previous role will be maintained, as the TAPS I will take on additional responsibilities and duties to support students, their learning and their future planning. This is an exciting new venture and we are confident that it will enhance and further build the many supports already in place at Mater Dei for our students. From now on, this page of the newsletter will be headed Transition and Pathways Specialist.

UNSW Civil and Environmental Engineering Work Experience Week
The UNSW School of Civil and Environmental Engineering will be holding a work experience program to promote engineering career options to high school students. The program will be run during Week 5 of Term 2 from 27 - 31 May, and will be available to Year 10 students across NSW.
The program will allow students to experience engineering projects first hand across six areas of the civil and environmental engineering field, namely:
• Coastal and Port Infrastructure
• Structures and Design
• Construction and Project Management
• Water, Wastewater and Environment
• Road, Transport and Geotechnical Engineering
• Surveying and Geospatial Engineering
Daily field trips will be led by UNSW staff. Students selected for the program will be required to meet daily at 8.50am, at Central Station, with each day of the program finishing at approximately 4pm at UNSW. Students must be available to attend the full five day program. UNSW CVEN is interested in receiving applications from students who are self-motivated, reliable, punctual, and who have a strong mathematical ability.
Importantly, students must have an interest in pursuing a career in engineering. Please note that interested students must be confident in using public transport. A maximum of two students per school may be nominated. The UNSW will select 60 applicants satisfying the application criteria. Please see Mr O’Connell asap if you are interested in attending.
Army Logistic Training Centre (ALTC) Careers Open Day Excursion
Event Date: Friday 29 March 2019
Location: Latchford Barracks, Bonegilla Victoria 3691
Participants: This event is open to 20 students in Year 10, 11 and 12 that are interested in a career in the Defence Force. Places will be allocated on a first in basis. Please let Mr O’Connell know asap if you wish to attend.
The aim of this day is to showcase the technical trades and training offered by the Training Establishments (Military Schools) within ALTC. Displays from the Army School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, the Army School of Health, the Army School of Ordinance, the Defence Field Catering School and the Army School of Transport will demonstrate viable career options, within Defence, whilst a snapshot of military life will be provided through weapons displays, physical training activities, simulation and interaction.
The option of Army Reserve service will be presented by the Prince Of Wales Light Horse Regiment (a local Army Reserve Unit) and Defence Force Recruiting Staff will be on hand to provide specific recruitment information.
Activity participants will be able to talk to soldiers who are in training, see a variety of armoured and non- armoured military vehicles and participate in a simulated weapons practice (WTSS) and Physical Training Activity.
YMCA Youth Parliament
YMCA NSW Youth Parliament Program is now accepting applications.
YMCA NSW Youth Parliament is an a-political empowerment and advocacy program that provides a platform for young people to have their voices heard through legislative debate and decision making. Participants create bills with their peers, then head to NSW Parliament House to debate these bills in front of real MPs.
This program is for young people in years 10-12 or age equivalent. Applications close on February 15 and can be submitted here: Youth Parliament 2019
Taronga Zoo Work Experience
Taronga Zoo Sydney offers school work experience opportunities for students in years 10 – 12 who are interested in pursuing a career in zokeeping, animal care, tourism or zoo horticulture.
Places in Taronga’s work experience program are very competitive and applications for 2019 are now open. If you are interested in applying, speak to your school careers adviser who will liaise with Taronga on your behalf.
Any students that are interested in this must collect an application pack from Mr O'Connell. One student will be selected based on an application and interview process.

Air Force Technical Camp for Young Women

Now you have the rare chance to get a taste of life as an Air Force technician/engineer with Air Force Technical Camp for Young Women. Held at RAAF Base Wagga, the Tech Camp is a four-day residential program designed to give aspiring young women aged 16-24 a comprehensive overview of life in the Air Force. During the program you will be exposed to the day-to-day activities of a technician/engineer, and will have the opportunity to experience the Air Force lifestyle as a whole.
The dynamic program will include an overview of the Air Force technical/engineer roles, experiential opportunities within a workshop environment. Practical activities and presentations from serving Air Force technicians/engineers who will talk about their roles and personal experiences, including what motivated them to join the Air Force. During this opportunity you will be able to gain insight into what the training is really like if you decide to join the Air Force. As well, you may get to experience simulated weapons training, light physical training in the gym and after hours supervised social events with female mentors.
