RESPECT:

We'd like to thank our fabulous School Captains Joely A, Melody L, Hugo B, and Archie F

who represented our College with honour and respect at a private service held in the morning at the ANZAC Day service  at Torquay RSL Memorial Garden.

Joely spoke on behalf of SCSC and as a mark of respect, our representatives laid a lovely bouquet of flowers to honour those who served and continue to serve our beautiful country.

~ Lest We Forget

Year 7 Wood Technology

FLOURISH: Students from 7B have used the schools new Cricut machine to create stickers to personalise their work or the laser cutter to laser engrave their work also.

We have photographed a couple of pictures of the finished product of their 2 tier herb gardens that the students have been working hard on to complete throughout Term 1 and start of Term 2.  They have done an amazing job and should all be proud of their work!

Year 8 English Immersion Activity

RESPECT: In preparation for our study of the text The Road to Winter by Mark Smith, the Year 8 students participated in a simulation challenge called The Great Escape that placed them in the shoes of asylum seekers and refugees, whose experiences are explored throughout the novel.

Students took on the roles of refugee families and worked in teams to make it across the border to safety and away from their war-torn homes. Each challenge they faced involved a critical decision to make and students had to discuss which option to take, all the while rationing food and water and avoiding a pursuing army.

Simulations such as this one allow students to connect to the real world and, in a small way, consider the life and death dilemmas that people on the other side of the globe have to deal with, where safety and a place to belong are not guaranteed - a concept difficult for most of us to imagine. It also allows students to consider the perspectives of different characters in the text and have a greater understanding of their experiences.

Year 9 Girl In Charge

STRIVE: At the end of last Term we were lucky enough to have more inspirational women from the Surf Coast Community come and speak with our students in regards to careers, setbacks, opportunities, being a women in today’s society and all the incredible things they get to do within their chosen careers (see pics!!)

Thanks to:

Laura Colley – Homicide Squad Detective

Alex Kitchings & Sam Radlof – Vic Police Critical Incident Response Team (Aussie version of SWAT)

Rachelle Poustie – Fire Rescue Victoria

Hayley Trevean – ex AFLW player & Vic Police Officer

Our Girl In Charge students also had their graduation. Each and every student involved has given 110%, grown in confidence in their umpiring and been a fantastic representative of our school in all they have done.

Year 10 Outdoor and Environmental Studies

UNITE: Students in the Year 10 Outdoor and Environmental Studies class completed a problem solving activity – constructing rafts and paddling across Spring Creek.

Students were given PVC pipe, fence palings and rope and had to work as a team to complete the task. Thank you to Bunnings for donating some goods for the project!

Year 11 VCE Food Studies

Smoked Eel Croquettes

FLOURISH: Over the course of 4 weeks, Year 11 VCE Food Studies students have been focusing on the history and culture of food in Australia. They have been looking at

Chargrilled 'roo with Macadamia, Pepperberry & Wattleseed Dukah
Chargrilled 'roo with Macadamia, Pepperberry & Wattleseed Dukah

Indigenous food prior to European settlement including the range of foods and flavorings available.

By cooking dishes such as Smoked Eel Croquettes, Local Clam, Sandfire & Saltbush Linguine and Chargrilled Kangaroo with Macadamia, Pepperberry and Wattleseed Dukah, students have been able to work with local Indigenous ingredients and demonstrate their importance to contemporary Australian cuisine and culture.

Year 12 Pathways Camp

STRIVE: In the last week of Term 1, the Year 12 students were finally able to attend their inaugural Pathways Camp (their first camp since they were in Year 9!)  This involved tours and Q+A sessions at a range of tertiary institutions in Melbourne CBD (The University of Melbourne, RMIT and William Angliss Institute), study workshops and wellbeing sessions.

Students also had the opportunity to explore the CBD and all its offerings (museums, galleries and exhibitions) as well as enjoy some recreational time together bowling, playing laser tag and ice-skating each evening.  The students had a great time preparing for what's to come and creating memories they will look back on long after they graduate.

This included a top designs visit at the Melbourne Museaum shich had an inspirational exhibition for our Media, Product Design & Technology and Visual Communication and Design students. The quality of work was just incredible and definitely inspired the students!

Year 12 VCAL Melbourne Grand Prix Visit

On the last day of Term 1, 12 VCAL students attended the Melbourne Grand Prix Practice Sessions as part of the ‘Drive to Learn’ Educational Experience.

The opportunity not only assisted in completing learning outcomes but was also just good fun being a part of the atmosphere and excitement!

Koorie Student Aspirations Day

UNITE: Last Term on  Monday 4th April  and Tuesday 5th April our First Nations students attended The Koorie Student Aspirations Day at GMHBA Stadium in the Presidents Room.

The day consisted of raffles, giveaways, show bags, workshops and information. There was a number of market stalls all relating to further education, training and job opportunities for our Koorie students.

Students were given the opportunity to participate in two workshops from Traditional Games, AIME Leadership, Indigenous Art and, Hip Hop.

We were very lucky to see presentations from Kim Farmer from Polly Farmer foundation and Isaiah Firebrace a 2016 Winner of X-Factor and 2017 Australian representative in Eurovision.

It was great way to connect with other students in the area and we look forward to next year.
