SPORT REPORT - TERM 1, WEEK 4

Another poor week of weather has hampered our MCS Cricket teams to pursue semi final action. All teams sit in the top four of their competitions, but final positions could be jeopardised by next week’s action. Our MCS Basketball teams played their first game of the season in the College Hall and there was a fantastic atmosphere produced by the spectators.  Good luck to our three College teams in basketball semi-finals next week.

MCS REPORTS

1st Grade Basketball (81) defeated St Patrick’s Dundas (36)

It is at this point in the season where there is nothing left for the coach to say and just hope that all the advice provided throughout the season has sunk in. It seems as though it has. This team is very well drilled, and it is the numerous Wednesday morning training sessions that this group has made their own for the last 5 years. Their commitment to one another and the St Greg's badge is inspiring. Smart options on offense and tenacity on defence produced another solid win this week and sets us up nicely for the semi-finals. Special thanks to those students that remained to support our First Grade team.

MVP: Darcy Pullen (Kilian)

2nd Grade Basketball (47) defeated St Patrick’s Dundas (21)

This was the best game the boys have played all season. They controlled the game from the tip-off. The other team had no answer to the powerful defence. The offence was excellent with all players hitting the scoresheet and just in time for the semi-finals. They showed fantastic teamwork right throughout the game.

MVP: Pablo Tamongdong (Molloy)

Year 9/10 Basketball (31) were defeated St Patrick’s Dundas (41)

The boys were excited to be playing at home. They started the game strong doing all the basics extremely well. The 1st half of the game got away from them and we found ourselves behind by 20 points at the break. A re-group and discussions on what needed to happen for a comeback was had during the halftime break, as well as focusing the boys on enjoying their last game and using the energy of the home court advantage. The boys took the court with huge gusto and fire in their bellies and took the 2nd half by storm. Great bench interchanges saw combinations between the boy’s work magic with some blistering attacks and solid defence. In the end we brought the final score back to a 9-point deficit. I am extremely proud of how the boys handled the pressure and showed true Greg’s spirit of not giving up.

MVP: Jonathan Le Breton (Laurentian)

Mr Ivancic

Year 8/9 Basketball (63) defeated St Patrick’s Dundas (12)

The boys were determined to put in a good performance to finish the season, and that they did! All members of the squad got a good opportunity to get involved in our last game of the season. They were at it from the tip-off and the scoring was spread easily across the team. It was an excellent collective performance. Well done boys, there is a lot of talent and ability in the team and I look forward to what the future holds for this group of players.

MVP: Kohan Prenter (Molloy)

Mr Limbrey

Year 7/8 Basketball (48) defeated St Patrick’s Dundas (29)

The coach felt very concerned when a 190cm  (6’3”) player hit the court for Dundas. During the first half it was very competitive, and we were unable to make a substantial lead with the opposition answering most of our baskets so we went into half time with a lead 18 – 14. It seemed as though the team finally worked out the formula to forge ahead with excellent teamwork and outstanding passion. Highlights - Lachlan Barrie scoring, Lucas Donnelly giving his all against someone twice his height and the team breaking away for a great victory.

MVP: Mason Hunter (Kilian)

Mrs Giles

Summer Sport Options

This year we will be trialling an online permission note for Representative College teams that compete in MCS, NSW CCC and other knockout competitions. All Thursday recreational activities will also be covered through this Google Form.

This request is to be completed for the start of the Winter Season which commences in Week 8 of  Term One. We ask all parents and carers to complete the online permission to allow all students a quick transition into the Winter Season of College sports.

House Cup

Moving forward into 2020, the St Gregory’s College House Cup will be back up and running. All student participation and achievement in academic, sport and co-curricular activities will be accounted for as it contributes to the four Houses total point score. The House Cup and leading point contributor will be acknowledged at the Year 12 final College Assembly in Term Three of 2020. I look forward to overseeing and revitalising this competition for the students of the College.

ISA BASKETBALL 8/2/20

We played 5 away games against Oakhill College with the following results:

  • UN 13s Loss 27-34
  • UN 14s Loss 35-45
  • UN 15s Loss 26-54
  • UN 17s Loss 34-47
  • 1sts Win 86-65

In the 13s game Lindon Monck played well in the playmaking position with some nice assists and ball-handling. Cooper Clarke made some  good drives and finished well around the basket. Isaac Sykes was a long range marksmen knocking down 2 triples.

In the 14s game Jake Wright & Chayseton Mulholland displayed great teamwork and also lead the team in scoring. Steve Moran-Briggs & Tyrel Kelly applied great full court pressure in defence against Oakhill.

In the 15s game Brock Freeburn matched his scoring output from last round with 6 points and Trae Fitzpatrick displayed some good outside shooting.

In the 17s game Jack Rule managed to get to the free throw line on a number of occasions drawing fouls on the opposition. Jack Stewart controlled the game and scored inside and out whilst Jack Pascoe was best around the basket.

The 1sts game was impressive with the trio of Michael Zappia, Lindsay Munro & Darcy Pullen forcing turnovers with their excellent defence and scoring well off fast breaks to lead St Greg’s to a decisive 21 point victory.

ISA Basketball 15/02/20

  • We played 5 games against Redfield with the following results:
  • UN/13s Loss 13-50
  • UN/14s Win 43-35
  • UN/15s Loss 32-52
  • UN/17 Win 54-32
  • 1sts Win 89 to 81

Unfortunately, our UN/13s took a large loss against a more experienced Redfield side. After a slow start, St Greg’s began to play better in the 2nd half. Both Taj Stapleton & Oliver Pullen were effective on both ends of the court.

St Greg’s UN/14s played exceptionally well. Tyrel Kelly made some excellent assists & Jake Wright played a good all round game.

Our UN/15s played well despite losing to a more experienced Redfield side. Fergus Shelton rebounded well & contested shots in defence. Three pointers were dropped by Jesse Lamont, Tyron McMahon & Trae Fitzpatrick.

In the UN/17s St Greg’s had a good win against Redfield. The highlight play of the game was a contested one handed slam dunk by Sam Corkhill, his first ever dunk in a game. Jack Stewart & Brent Heyhorn displayed some red hot shooting and managed to combine for 13 three-pointers in this game!

In 1st grade St Greg’s controlled the game throughout and although Redfield made a late comeback we won by 8 points. It was a good team effort with twin towers of Billy Pay & Dylan Ruiters proving difficult for Redfield to stop around the basket.

NSW CCC Cricket

On Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th February, seven boys represented St Gregory's College in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges Cricket Trials in Riverwood. Fifty boys from across NSW competed for selection into the NSW team to be chosen to compete at the All Schools Championships in Maitland against Public and Independent High Schools. Two intense days of cricket with three games saw some wonderful cricket played and the St Greg’s boys performing strongly.

Joshua Shipley, Bryan Handunneththi, Jake Di Tomasso, Liam Sutton, Joshua Campbell and Kane Truman were our representatives over the two days. Through their performances, we congratulate Liam Sutton, Joshua Campbell and Kane Truman on their selection and wish them well at the next carnival.
