From the Director of Students

2020 will be a year of continual change and reflective practices towards student wellbeing and welfare. One major focus will be renewing and updating policies that will best support our student population.  Towards the end of last year, the College sent out a survey to students regarding our current ‘College Merit System’. From this feedback, we have clarity about what students believed would inspire them towards further positive behaviours in the classroom and the yard.

This term, students will notice classroom teachers handing out Positive Merits in class. These Merits will be sent to students via email at the end of each week notifying them of their achievement.

In recent years there has been a large amount of research leaning towards ‘Positive Education’ and ‘Positive Psychology’ in schools. Positive Education brings together the science of Positive Psychology with best-practice teaching, to encourage and support individuals, schools and communities to flourish. We refer to flourishing as a combination of ‘feeling good and doing good’. Positive Education focuses on specific skills that assist students to strengthen their relationships, build positive emotions, enhance personal resilience, promote mindfulness and encourage a healthy lifestyle. Through teaching these valuable life skills, schools provide students with an increased capacity to learn effectively, as well as offering them a strong foundation on which they can build a successful life.

Positive Educational practices will be introduced at St Greg’s and implemented over the coming years in an attempt to enhance the social-emotional learning and wellbeing of the students in our College.
