From the Principal...

Dear Parents and Friends of St Therese's Primary School,

October Mission Month

World Mission Sunday is on 20th October 2019. It helps people think about how to build a better world for all of God's people. Pope Francis has chosen the theme 'Baptised and Sent: The Church of Christ on Mission in the World'. The Extraordinary Missionary Month is an invitation for all to join in and do something extraordinary for mission. This year, Pope Francis asks each of us to think about ‘What’s My Mission?’In Pope Francis’ special message for World Mission Day, he says ‘I am a mission, always; you are a mission, always…. As far as God’s love is concerned, no one is useless or insignificant.’

We will fulfill our call to mission through raising money for the survivors of the devastating earthquakes that his Japan.

Sensai Andrews has organised a special fundraising event. During Japanese lessons from 6th - 9th November, the children will be invited to take part in pancakes for a gold coin donation. What a yummy way to raise money! The other way children can become involved in Mission Month is through guessing the lolly in the jar. The jar will be kept at the office and all guesses are 20cents. The winner of the lolly jar competition will be announced on Japanese Day on Thursday, October 14.

Sensai Andrews would be very grateful for any parents or grandparents who wish to help with the making of pancakes. If you can help please contact the office, or respond to CareMonkey later this week.

Commitment to Child Safety

St Therese's school is committed to the safety of all children. We regularly discuss and update our policies and practices that ensure all children are protected from child abuse. Please read the updated policies that are on our website or contact the office for a hard copy to be sent home.

Crazy Hair Day

Last Friday, many children came to school crazy hair. A big THANK YOU to Ella in Year 2 for her initiative to organise this day. The school raised $158.75. All money raised will go directly to the building of our prayer garden.

Check out some of the photos of the crazy hair styles.

St Therese's 30th Anniversary & Art Show

Tuesday 12th November we will celebrate our 30th Anniversary and Art Show. This day will be filled with fun activities - KABOOM! will be back to entertain us for the morning. Father Joseph will celebrate a Whole School Mass with us and our new Prayer Garden will be blessed.

Throughout the day and into the evening the Art Show will be opened for families to enjoy. A giant picnic is planned and we invite all families to participate by bringing along a plate of food to share that is from your country of origin.

Last week, Mrs Hogan was very busy working with the children to complete the mosaics for the garden. Each class has designed and created a mosaic paver that will be installed in the garden.

The following are pictures of the pavers and the meaning behind each one.

  1. St Therese our saint is often pictured holding a cross. We used her words, ‘What matters most is not great deeds but great love,' to inspire our designs.
  2. The chalice and host remind us of Jesus great love in giving up his body and blood for us.
  3. A candle is lit when we pray to remind us that Jesus is with us.
  4. Our helping hands mosaic shows that all different skin colours make up the children of our school and that all are loved. We help and care for each other.
  5. The dove of peace holding an olive branch is the emblem of our school, reminding us of the hope of Noah in the Old Testament, and the symbol of the Holy Spirit.
  6. The 3 crosses of Calvary and the love heart remind us of the selfless death and resurrection of Jesus.
  7. Our creation mosaic shows a rainbow, a sun, and clouds in our beautiful world.
  8. A heart is shown with a fish symbol inside it, the first symbol ever used to depict Christianity. The fish symbol links to the symbol for infinity here as God’s love is for eternity.
  9. This mosaic of the boat on the Sea of Galilee awash with a huge wave reminds us of the gospel story when Jesus calmed the storm. We are not afraid, with Jesus beside us.
  10. A beautiful cross shines and reminds us of Jesus and our catholicity.
  11. A shamrock reminds us of the Trinity. Like the 3 parts on one leaf, God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are one.
  12. A labyrinth has been historically used for prayer and meditation .
  13. St Therese is known as the little flower. Our little flower is made out of hearts, the symbol of love.

School Advisory Committee

The School Advisory Committee is a terrific opportunity to be involved in your child's education. At the meetings, we discuss policies, parent-school connections and other aspects of school life. The meetings occur once per month. If you would like to be part of this committee please let me know. We would love to see more parents attending. Don't forget that if you have a suggestion for the Board to discuss, use the suggestion eform located in the School News section of the newsletter.

Our next committee meeting is to be held at 6:30pm on Tuesday 22nd October.

God Bless,
