Foundation Unit

News

This term in Foundation in Mathematics, we are exploring addition and subtraction. The students will be practising combining two groups of items and finding the total amount. As the term progresses we will move from language such as 2 and 3 makes 5 to the more formal 2 plus 3 equals 5. Students are not required to use the addition and equal signs until Year 1 but some students will use them if they are comfortable with this. We will use a variety of materials to help us explore addition and subtraction such as die, playing cards, blocks and counters and games. Often children need to explore a concept in a variety of ways, with a variety of materials, over a lot of lessons and experiences for it to be fully grasped. This week the students started exploring using dominoes.
