Middle Unit

Years 1 and 2

NAIDOC week

The Year 1s and 2s have been learning all about NAIDOC week. NAIDOC week was officially from the 7th to the 14th of July. As we were all on holidays during that time, we worked with students to understand the meaning and importance of NAIDOC week before and after the holiday break. The children discussed and analysed the Acknowledgement of Country that gets spoken at Woodend PS assemblies and learnt about ways that respect can be shown to the traditional owners of this land.

Learning about NAIDOC week has been the perfect introduction to our current Integrated Studies unit ‘You and Me: Our Country’ which aims to highlight connections that can be made between Indigenous Australians and everyone living in Australia today. From these lessons, students have already highlighted the following things they would like to further learn about:

  • Some words in an aboriginal language
  • Body paint
  • Dreamtime stories
  • What aboriginals wear
  • How aboriginals get their food
  • Where and how aboriginals build their shelters

Year 3

Welcome back to Term 3! The students have been excited to share their holiday adventures with the class.

Lots of fun to be had in reading and writing this term. We are investigating fractured fairytales. We have been loving reading different versions of some of our favourite fairytales this week. We are also going to have a go at writing our own version of a fractured fairytale.

We are starting to send home spelling words this term. You should see a new little exercise book appear in your child’s bag. We are encouraging students to practise their weekly spelling words at home. Home spelling books need to come to school every Friday for students to complete weekly Spelling Tests.

In Maths we have been working on developing our mental addition and subtraction facts. Students have been learning number games they can teach you at home too! Many only need dice or playing cards.

Students have been having fun with our new Science unit – Heating Up! This week we looked at the transfer of heat energy from our hands and how we can melt an ice cube!

Here are some photos from our week!
