Kitchen garden

We are very excited to begin the SKIPPS kitchen garden program in 2020.  We look forward to be involved in working with the student and to support them on their journey to discover all about pleasurable food education.

Next week we will begin our kitchen garden classes with a walk and talk through the SKIPPS kitchen garden. We will introduce the students to all the wonderful vegetables, herbs and fruit trees in our garden.

Some of the herbs and vegetables we may see in our kitchen garden are:

  • Tomatoes
  • Zucchini
  • Basil
  • Thai Basil
  • Pumpkins
  • Sunflower
  • Corn
  • Coriander
  • Chilli
  • Warrigal greens
  • Lemon myrtle

We can’t wait to harvest these ingredients and cook them with the students this term. We hope to use these fresh seasonal ingredients in a few of our Italian inspired menus.

The students will also be introduced to the kitchen. They will enjoy discovering all the tools they will be using in the kitchen to make the amazing fresh seasonal dishes which they will share with the teacher and the volunteers for lunch.

The students will make Vietnamese rice paper rolls on the first session and enjoy them with a cup of mint tea, using the mint they will harvest from our kitchen garden.

Compost and soil health is also a major part of the kitchen garden program, we will be discovering how to make our own soil.

Art in the garden is always a fun and exciting topic. We will be building structures with the students to support our beans and peas as they grow……Just watch this space.

Happy Cooking and Gardening
