Week 1 Home learning Snapshot Grade One

Welcome Back to Term 2
Welcome back to Term 2! This term will look very different for all of us. We acknowledge that everyone is feeling a range of emotions but we are all in this together. We do not expect you to replicate the classroom experience during this time. However, we ask that you work through the daily Seesaw activities with your child and importantly, you acknowledge your child's commitment to learning in these unusual circumstances.
We acknowledge that there may be hiccups, challenges, emotions and technical difficulties along the way. We understand this and encourage you to do the best you can. We have created slides to answer some of your wonderings here.
In addition, the BPS home learning plan with FAQs will be able to address many of your questions.
English
During Term 1, students have been working on building their reading stamina and practising the independent behaviours of 'Read to Self' and selecting 'Good Fit Books'. Please have a discussion with your child about what makes a 'Good Fit Book'. You can use the analogy of 'good fit shoes' to get you started.
Reading Specialist Gail Boushey teaches you how to support your child with reading independently and building their reading stamina at home. Included are a series of short parent and student videos to support you and your child reading at home during this time.
English Tasks
Our reading strategy for this week is 'Making connections to ourselves when reading'. Students connect their own experiences with the text to better understand and make sense of what they are reading. Your child will be asked to watch How are you Peeling and respond in writing how they connected to the text. Children will also be asked to write a recount from their school holidays.
Helping Your Child With This Reading Strategy at Home
'Making connections to ourselves when reading'
Have you ever read a story and been able to connect on a personal level with a character or storyline? Do you notice that it is easier to read and comprehend something that you have background knowledge of? This is because readers bring information from what they already know or what they have previously read about a topic and connect it with what they are reading. This increases their understanding of the text and helps them remember what they have read. Using prior knowledge can help students connect their own experiences with the text to better understand and make sense of what they are reading. How can you help your child with this strategy at home? 1. When reading with your child, pause before and during the reading of the text to relate what is being read in the story to what is already known. 2. Model for your child how you activate prior knowledge before you begin reading. Use some of the following questions to get started: x What experiences have you had that might be similar to what this book cover is telling you? x What do you already know about this content, genre, or author? x While reading: Does this part of the story remind you of anything you have done before or read before that will help you understand this section of the story better? x Using what you already knew about the topic, did that information help you understand this selection? 3. Remind your child that a reader can connect text to many different experiences. They can make a ´text to selfµ connection (connecting to personal experiences), a ´text to worldµ connection (what they know about the world that will help them better understand the story), or a ´text to textµ connection (the current book reminds them of a previous book read). When your child makes a connection, see if he/she can identify what kind of connection was made. Thank you for your continued support at home!
Wellbeing
Each day students practise mindfulness to create calmer classrooms. This is something that you can continue at home by using The Smiling Mind App which can be downloaded for free via the App store.
Here are some mindfulness colouring pages for those children who love this activity.
Mathematics
This week in Maths students will be developing their understanding of money. Our learning intentions include:
*Identifying Australian coins according to their features
*Matching coins to their value
*Ordering coins according to their value
You will receive the Maths tasks on Seesaw throughout the week. There will also be an attachment of Australian notes and coins.
Inquiry
Children will be asked to Inquire into what an effective home learning space looks like. Take a photo of your home learning space after you have set it up and share it on Seesaw for your teacher to see.
