Junior School Learning

Prep

What a busy week it has been in Prep/1!

In Literacy in the Prep/1 classes we have been learning about narrative writing. Narratives are fictional (made up) stories and always start by introducing our characters and setting. We have had a lot of fun creating a complication for our narratives and thinking of how the story will end.

We have also focused on individual sounds such as the 'or' sound as in 'fork'. We found many different ways to make the 'or' sound including  /or/ as in fork, shore, sauce and jaw.

In Numeracy, Prep/1 we have been learning about money. We have worked on naming coins and notes and have discussed the value of each. We have used real life examples of money to ‘purchase’ items from our classroom shops. Did you know that two fifty cent coins add up to 100 cents, which is the same as $1?

Prep F have started learning in the kitchen!  We have learnt how to set the table and made some tasty pizza scrolls. While Prep F are in the kitchen, Prep/1L have been helping maintain our garden.  This week they made some new labels for garden.

Both classes have been learning about time.  We have made analogue clocks and are now learning how to read o’clock and half past times.

Grades 1 and 2

In Inquiry, the Junior School have been learning all about ‘The Arts’. Students have been working had to learn plays and songs to perform at the end of term. They are very excited to show all the different ways they have incorporated many different Art styles.

In maths last week, students in the grade one and two classes have been learning about Australian money. They have been counting and ordering small collections of coins and notes according to their value and identifying equivalent values in collections of coins or notes. Here students are finding different ways to make $1.00 and counting collections of coins to make up a particular value.

This week we are learning about multiplication and different strategies to solve multiplication problems. Students have been using playdough to help them solve multiplication word problems.

Junior School Expo

Wednesday 18th September 2.30pm

Our Term 3 Expo will take a different form than other terms. In Term 3 the Junior School have been learning about The Arts. Students have developed an understanding that The Arts is more than painting or drawing and includes other forms such as dance, drama, music and performance. Each Junior School class has been working hard on creating a performance to perform at our Expo.

Grade 1/2W will be performing plays. Each student has a part in one of the plays. A message about each student’s part in the play will be sent out soon but before I can finalise parts, I need to know if any student is not going to be here for the performance. Please let your teacher know as soon as possible if you know your child will be away on the day so they can reallocate their part in the play.
