National Sorry Day
National Sorry Day is a significant day for Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and particularly for Stolen Generation survivors. The idea of holding a ‘Sorry Day’ was included as one of the recommendations of the Bringing them home Report into the forcible removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, communities, and cultural identity. This report was tabled in Parliament on 26 May 1997.
Today we say sorry for the unbelievable actions of the past and for the intergenerational trauma it has caused. The ongoing apology recognises and acknowledges these actions were not isolated events and that truth-telling is an important part of healing for our nation.
National Sorry Day precedes the first day of National Reconciliation Week each year.
The dates for Reconciliation Week are the same every year.
We start Reconciliation Week by commemorating the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum on 27 May and conclude the week by recognizing the anniversary of the Mabo High Court Decision on 3 June.
In 2021 our Connected Schools community developed a vision for Reconciliation endorsed across all sites.
Please find the video below and reflect on the significance of the words and all they represent.
