Karoo House Athletics

On Friday 19th May all students from Year 3-6 travelled to AC Robertson Athletics Track to participate in our Karoo House Athletics Day. This involved competing in 7 different athletics events, including the 100m sprint, 200m sprint, hurdles, long jump, triple jump, discus and shot put. There were some students who also competed in the 800m endurance run. Although I was unable to attend on the day due to the birth of my newborn child, I was informed by the staff who attended that our students were to be commended for their encouragement and support of each other, as well as striving to achieve their personal best. Ringwood Athletics Club also acknowledged the students and stated we had "well behaved children and great parent support," and for that, I am extremely proud.

The amount of work involved in running the Karoo House Athletics Day is enormous and I simply can't thank Gemma Wild and Joshua Edwards enough for taking on the role of convening the day together. I admire your composure, organisation and responsibility. I would like to extend my thanks to the amazing parent helpers for their support on the day and for volunteering their time to make the day possible for the students. The feedback that I have received has indicated the event ran smoothly, which in turn, resulted in high levels of engagement for the students.

A reminder the top 2 performing students for each age group and gender, in each event, may progress through to District Athletics on Friday 11th August at AC Robertson Athletics Track. However please be aware that when finalising the Karoo District Athletics Team for 2023, students who were unable to attend the event  can be considered for special consideration based on their performance for each event during PE sessions.

Year 5/6 District Sport Round Robin

On Friday 26th May the Year 5/6 students participated in day 1 of the District Sport Round Robin. Over two days, they will have competed against 7 other schools in the Rowville District. The second day will take place on Friday 9th June. The sports involved in the District Sport Round Robin include AFL, Bowls, Netball, Soccer and Teeball.

A massive thank you to Chris Jackel, Claire Moyle, Gemma Wild, Joshua Edwards, Michelle Davies, Robyn Harris and Shelley Williams who all took on additional roles to ensure the equipment and uniforms were organised in preparation for the day. I would also like to acknowledge the parent helpers for assisting each sport by either coaching a team, refereeing/umpiring or providing additional supervision of the students.

Well done to the students for displaying great sportsmanship and camaraderie on the first day. I look forward to receiving the final results and sharing these with the school community following the conclusion of the event on Friday 9th June.

Good luck to all students for the second and final day of the District Sport Round Robin!

Westfield Launch Clinic

It brings me great pleasure to announce some very exciting news...

Knox Basketball are partnering with Westfield for their opening of Knox Shopping Centre and were hoping to have a school involved with the unveiling of their brand-new outdoor court. Our school has luckily been selected to attend due to our participation in the Aussie Hoops Program. Knox Basketball have requested to run a clinic scenario for around 20 – 25 students at 3 different time slots next week on Thursday 8th of June. The clinic times are 9:30am, 11:00am and 2:00pm. Each time slot will run for 1 hour and 15 minutes. This includes 1 hour of clinics and 15 minutes of meet and greet with their Senior NBL1 players. To assist with organisation, they have asked for a Year 1 & 2 class for the first time slot, 3 & 4 class for the second time slot and 5 & 6 class for the last time slot. The program is completely free of charge, which also includes free bus transportation to and from the venue.

Due to the short notice regarding this opportunity, we have used an online wheel with class names to randomly select one class to attend from each sub school. We are obviously limited for time, and therefore don't have enough turnaround time to ask for expression of interest and narrow down a list of 20 - 25 students in each sub school.

I would like to congratulate the following classes who have been selected to attend this event: 2C, 3M & 5D

To the parents who have a child in these classes, the event information is now available on Compass and you will need to consent for your child to attend and travel on the bus.

Sport School Victoria Trials

In the last newsletter I mentioned that Aden T (6M) progressed to the second stage of the Sport School Victoria trials for football. Since then, Aden attended his second stage trials on Friday 19th May and received the exciting news that he was successful in making it through to the stage 3 trials. Aden participated in the stage 3 trials on Monday 29th May. This was the final stage of progression for Aden. To put this into perspective, Aden made it to the final 140 students out of approximately 1500 students across the state. I would like to recognise the huge accomplishment and enormous achievement of Aden in his final year at Karoo Primary School.

Aden, we are so lucky to have such a talented athlete represent our school and you should be extremely proud of yourself. I am sure this experience will be invaluable in your football career and I can't wait to watch you hopefully wear the black and white in the future!
