Foundation

Literacy

This fortnight in text construction, students have been introduced and begun to explore writing questions and statements using dotted thirds! Students have embraced using the dotted thirds to form their letters and it has been fantastic working alongside them doing so. We also have been learning to write questions about the decodable text we have been reading in class and using punctuation to finalise these questions. We can’t wait to further develop our understandings around writing questions and statements!

Numeracy

This fortnight in Numeracy, we introduced students to addition and subtraction problems. Students were given addition stories where they needed to identify the two numbers being added together to make the whole and subtraction stories where they were given the whole and they needed to take away a part to figure out what the leftover numbers make. Students have gained confidence using these two strategies and will continue to work on them. Well done Foundations, keep up the amazing effort!

Middle School News

In Literacy, students are learning about maps - why we need them, the different types of maps and the different features of maps such as keys and scales. They have been learning about the lines of latitude and longitude and why they are important and lots of new terminology such as the equator and hemispheres.

In Numeracy, students have continued to focus on  addition. It’s great to see their known number facts such as doubles and near doubles improving with practice. This helps them add larger numbers as well, while using the vertical addition strategy.

Visual Art

The Middle and Senior students have completed their sketch of a Chinese dragon eye. Using their sketch as a guide, students have started working with air-drying clay. They are using clay tools and techniques to craft their individual pieces. It has been wonderful to watch the students use their creativity and problem-solving skills as they work with the clay. Well done to everyone, the dragon eyes look fantastic. The junior students have been learning about the use of colour in visual art. As a class we discussed how artists utilize colour, and how this makes us feel when we look at their artwork. Students have been using coloured paper to make a rainbow that includes the primary and secondary colours. Great work juniors!

Senior School News

Lightning Premiership

On Friday Senior School students had the opportunity to compete in Soccer, Netball or Football at the Lightning Premiership, held at Bannockburn College.

Students chose a particular sport to train and practise skills during school then go and compete again other schools in the district.

Teachers were all very impressed with Teesdale students sportsmanship throughout the day. They encouraged one another during each game and played fairly against their opponents.

Well done Teesdale Senior School on a successful and fun day at Lightning Prem!

Buddies

Senior School B & C have both been very excited this year to support and build connections with our new members at Teesdale Primary School, Foundation students.

Senior students were each buddied up with a Foundation student to design and create a Mother's Day card for Foundation students to take home. 5/6s showed amazing leadership and care towards their new buddy getting to know them, their interests and supporting them around the classroom. They shared designs with them, colouring sheets and supported them to write a personal message to their loved one. Foundation students, feeling nervous at first, were super excited to meet and work with the Senior students in the school.

We have already noticed these friendships growing out in the yard during recess and lunch times when at times a Foundation student needs some support with a friend.

We look forward to watching our buddies continue to build these connections throughout different activities in the year.
