PBL- a reminder about our positive approach

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) brings together the whole school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture.

This framework assists our school to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for all students.

When PBL is implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on wellbeing and learning- everyone has the opportunity to learn and feel safe and included.

Resurrection School adopted PBL in 2018. Through a process of consultation with students, staff and families we identified three School expectations (Reskeys) which would lead to positive behaviour for learning:

  • Be Respectful
  • Be Responsible
  • Be Resilient

These expectations are a positive replacement for school rules (which have a more punitive tone). Everyone in our school community is expected to display positive behaviour by showing the Reskeys at all times and in all areas of the school. Students who show RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and RESILIENCE are acknowledged verbally, with custom-made stickers or Student Awards termly and annually. Students who do not show our Expectations are removed from the situation to complete a reflection 'Thinking Sheet' in timeout. This time includes discussion about how to mend a relationship or improve behaviour so that it aligns with our Expectations. All students are encouraged to choose HELPFUL words and actions not HURTFUL words and actions.

The School Expectations, or RESKEYS as they are known, are the KEYS to positive behaviour at RESurrection School. The symbol for each RESKEY is a key.

In all areas of the school we have displayed the Resurrection School Positive Behaviour for Learning Matrix. This is a visual reminder as well as a teaching tool for the RESKEYS in all areas of the school (learning spaces, outdoor spaces, gathering spaces, cyberspace and digital space, toilets and tap areas, passageways and walkways, in the community and in all areas). Classes discuss and reflect on each of the RESKEYS and what it looks like; each Expectation is explicitly taught and encouraged. We invite you to design a positive behaviour matrix for your family.

In partnership with families we aim to empower all students to be positive members of the school and wider communities so that they can be RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, RESILIENT world citizens.
