Year 6 Brolgas and Emus

The Year 6s have had an eventful first semester, with a variety of activities and new learning experiences. Term One included Camp. While there were some nervous students, everyone had a wonderful time. Additionally, we had the opportunity to show the school our camp experience through our Year 6 assembly.

This term we have dived into all things Migration. We have used this topic as our guide in literacy – writing recounts on famous Australian Migrants. In HASS – looking at different migrant groups and the reasons they’ve come to Australia over time. We tried to imagine what it would be like if we only had 10 mins to pack a backpack and leave our homeland.

We’ve surveyed and graphed where our families come from around the world. We’re in the middle of interviewing or researching Australian migrants and exploring their contribution to this country – so look out for a Year 6 coming your way soon to ask you some curly questions.

We have learnt how to code using Ozobots. With the robot, we have been creating some interesting challenges, such as mapping ways through the school while including moves such as turbo boosts and spins.  We are looking forward to using them to map out migrant’s journey from their homeland to Australia.

We are also really excited and looking forward to our excursion next week to walk the migrants journey as they got off the ships in Fremantle harbour between the 1950’s and 1970’s.
