Junior School News

What's happening in Years 7, 8 and 9.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am thrilled to share some exciting highlights from the past few weeks, which showcase our students’ achievements and the vibrant, positive culture within our school and our broader community.

Timezone excursion a hit

We recently took some students on a SWPBS (School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support) excursion to Timezone, a reward they have earned through diligent accumulation of Glenroy Gold Cards. These cards are our unique way of acknowledging and appreciating students when they exemplify our college values of respect, integrity, teamwork and achievement.

From the laughter echoing in the arcade to the smiles painted on every face, the joy was infectious. Our students, engaging in a variety of fun-filled activities, not only felt the positive reinforcement of their values but also strengthened their connection to Glenroy College.

Pizza surprise and city strolls

The academic growth of students represents the school value of achievement. Students exhibiting the most improvement since our last reporting cycles were also part of the school’s celebration, sharing a special pizza lunch with teachers. We understand the importance of celebrating growth just as much as achievement, and it is heartening to see their hard work acknowledged in this special manner.

Adding to the list of exciting events, a group of students who have achieved Academic Excellence had the opportunity to explore our very own Melbourne city.  This educational excursion offered our students an opportunity to immerse themselves in the city's rich history. This hands-on learning experience serves as both an acknowledgement of their academic excellence, and an innovative approach to broaden their understanding of the world around them.

Such positive experiences fuel an environment conducive of learning, growing, and bonding as a community. Not only do these events promote our college values, they also empower our students to strive for excellence, paving the way for their future success.

Junior school excellence

Glenroy College held a special assembly earlier this term to recognise and celebrate our hardest working junior students. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 gathered in the Performing Arts Centre to discover which students are showing the most academic improvement and focus when it comes to classroom learning.

You can see a list of all the students who received special certificates at the assembly for their efforts here.

The assembly also introduced our Junior level leaders to their classmates. The junior leaders (pictured below) have an important role in organising special events during the year, along with other responsibilities and duties.

Cyber safety expert gives students tips

Internet safety expert Brett Lee visited Glenroy College to give junior students the lowdown on staying safe online. Lee, a former police detective, told students all about the ins and outs of cyber safety and what it takes to be safe online. The Internet Safe Education founder gave them useful tips for preserving privacy and protecting their identities while using the internet.

Parents who want more information about internet safety, social media and teens can visit the Office of the E-Safety Commissioner's website.

Cooking up a kofta storm

Not sure what to cook for dinner tonight? If there's a Year 9 student in your family, you can challenge them to make lamb kofta in flatbread for everyone. That's exactly what we did with our Year 9 Food Technology class - and the results were mouthwatering.

Students chopped and diced and pan-fried the most delicious lamb koftas the College kitchen has ever seen. And - here's the bit that parents will really like to know - they even washed the dishes and wiped the benches after. Take a look for yourselves.

You can watch a video of the class in action over on the Glenroy College Facebook page.

Maths and sports do mix ... and here's proof

Year 9 students combined sports prowess with maths know-how for a special statistics assignment this term. Students compared different sports players by looking at their stats and creating frequency charts, stem-leaf plots, histograms, and calculating mean, median, and mode. Footy was a popular choice, as shown with Malak's marvellous contribution below, but other students looked at soccer, basketball and rugby
