Junior School

Junior School Report

WELCOME BACK! Semester 2 has begun and what a start to Term 3 it has been.  We hope everyone enjoyed a thoroughly deserved break over the two-week mid-year holidays, with some families using the time to get away and chase some sun.

The Junior School has been involved in several different extra-curricular activities already in the first few weeks of Term 3 including the College Production, KIOSC visits, a Science Incursion and Inter-school Sporting days, just to name a few. The remainder of the semester promises to be one full of opportunities for all Junior School students, and the Junior School team encourages everyone to get on board to make the most of these chances.

As we continue to move through the busy school year, we remind students of the importance of maintaining a ‘Growth Mindset’ approach to all their classes and other aspects of their schooling. Students are encouraged to use their newly learnt ‘Growth Mindset’ skills by applying them to independent learning and understanding, which will help guide their own – and their peers – learning capabilities.

A final message to say a very big welcome to all new students in the Junior School and we hope you enjoy your time here at Scoresby Secondary College.

Little Shop of Horrors; School Production

Thank You & Congratulations!

From everyone in the Junior School, we would like to say a very big and much deserved ‘well done’ and ‘congratulations’ to all members of the School Production Team! This includes numerous Junior School students who either played a part, helped with rehearsals, assisted crew members on the nights and or attended the production itself. We would also like to thank the staff behind the amazing extravaganza that was the ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ production, in particular Mr Sam Eddy, Mr Robin Czuchnowski and Ms Emily Phibbs.  All students who were involved in the production were not only able to showcase their raw talents on stage, but also their ability to work within a team to stage a great show, witnessed by all that attended the Knox Community Arts Centre on the two nights. A fantastic effort everyone!

Loren Watson 7A

“One of my roles in the production was the ensemble and dancing. I enjoyed the opportunity to perform in front of a big crowd.”

Charlotte Bishop 7C

“Being a part of the school production was fun and gave me the chance to make new friends and practice my acting and singing skills.

Lucy Harrison 8A

“I will definitely be doing the production again next year if given the opportunity, it was just too much fun!”

Paige Corvell 8A

“The school production this year was a lot of fun for everyone involved. Huge thanks to Mr Eddy, Miss Phibbs and Mr Czuchnowski for putting in the time and effort to help us prepare for opening night.”

Kaileb Dooling 8A

“My role for the school production was sound operator and I really enjoyed being a part of such an awesome show.”

Poppy Johnston 9B

“My favorite part of production this year was helping set up and interacting with people that I normally wouldn’t.”

Direin Weerasooriya 9A

“This was my first experience acting on stage and I would like to say thank you to everyone involved.”

Gareth Amor 9B

“Big thanks to backstage crew and everyone who came along to show some support.”

“My role was to assist backstage, in particular with special effects and make-up, whilst also being involved in the ensemble cast.”

Year 7 KIOSC Visit

In the very first week back from the break, the Year 7 cohort visited KIOSC on a Science excursion.  It was their first visit to KIOSC and something that will remain a part of their school curriculum and learning plan throughout their time here at Scoresby in the coming years. This visit was based around the Sciences, in particular ‘Space’ and ‘Robotics’ where students were tasked with exploring the different planets that make up our solar system and potentially the many galaxies that could exist within the universe.

Caitlin Wallace 7C

“We ventured to KIOSC to continue our learning of space. We participated in three activities involving looking at the planet Mars and even had a go at using VR technology.”

Lola Allain 7C

“We were given the opportunity to see what it might feel like to pick something up on Mars using VR. Picking things up became harder because of the special equipment that was needed. It was challenging but a lot of fun as well.”

Alyx Taylor 7B

“We learned how robotics work and that they can be programed to move in and around different obstacles. Next year’s group should make sure they get their forms back in on time, as they will definitely enjoy this excursion to KIOSC!”

Kaidyn Wooley 7A

“One of the activities asked us to figure out what materials we might need to build a house on Mars. We also got to experiment with dry ice which was pretty cool.”

Khye Bondini 7A

“At KIOSC, we discussed whether or not Mars is inhabitable and whether or not there might be life on Mars. We also learned about the different materials that can withstand Mars’s atmosphere.”

Science Dome Incursion

Early in Term 3, the students in Years 7 and 8 were lucky enough to be visited by ‘The Science Discovery Dome, who ran an interactive incursion in the Student Centre, inside a giant inflatable projection dome! The visit was aimed at supporting the current Science curriculum that is investigating ‘Our Place in Space’, including the planets in our local solar system, and in celebration of the 50-year anniversary of the first step taken by Neil Armstrong on the moon. All students had a fantastic experience with the incursion, and provided feedback on the day.

Maddy Crennan 7B

“I liked that we got to learn about the current topic of our class but in a different setting and a different way. It was different but a nice change and we learnt a lot that can help us with our Science studies.”

Jaslyn Dinh 7B

“The coolest part was learning about how the planets orbit each other and I was fascinated by the inside of the Dome.”

Tommy Bleakney 8A

“I enjoyed the Science Dome visit. The experience taught me how seasons are formed here on earth. I would like more of these incursions to happen in school as they make learning fun and enjoyable.”

Quinn Carty 8A

“We learned about the cycles of the sun and the moon and how they interact with the earth on a certain orbit. I particularly enjoyed the immersive space that we had the lesson in, as everywhere you looked you could see a visual of what space looks like.”

Kaidance Berryman 8A

“Overall it was a great experience, learning about sunlight and the many seasons that occur throughout the year on earth.”

Interschool Sport (Junior School)

In Term 3, the Junior School will be entering teams into the regional inter school sports days. The sports that are on offer for this term are junior basketball and table tennis. We have both boys and girls sides entered, and as well as wishing all involved the best of luck, we hope you have a great day out at your sport! Remember that all sports teams are required to bring and wear their full sports uniform on the day, unless otherwise stated by the teacher / coach on the day or our Sport Coordinator; Mr Phillips.

Night of the Notables

You are cordially invited to attend an evening of excitement and inspiration at the wonderful 2019 Scoresby Secondary College Night of the Notables.

Throughout Term 2 and 3, the Year 9 students have been tasked with collecting information on someone who demonstrates notability and who they find to be truly inspirational. Students will dress to impress as they adopt their notable’s persona and provide you with a unique insight into their achievements.

On the night you may learn basketball tips from Lebron James, the importance of tolerance from Anne Frank and the importance of giving from Bill Gates.

This event will take place on Tuesday 20 August 2019 at 7pm at the College. We invite you to come along with family and friends and support the Year 9 students in their presentation.

Mathematics

What an exciting start to the term we have had. Many students have received growth certificates which focuses on the percentage growth from pre-test to post-test.  We celebrate improvement in Mathematics not just academic ability.

Last term Year 8 students completed a Probability assignment where they created a game which demonstrated either a “Fair Game or Non Fair Game”. Students had to calculate the probability of different aspects of the game.

This term Year 7 students have taken part in the “Eureka Challenge”.  Students had to think about geometry and how different shapes create structure. Students created a free standing tower out of newspaper. The highest structure was 1.89m tall.
